Etymology

Peltophorum literally means "shield-bearing": from Greek {{transliteration|grc|pelt(ē)}} ({{wikt-lang|grc|πέλτη}}, "peltē shield"), with the interfix {{wikt-lang|la|-o-}}, -phor(os) ("bearing") and Neo-Latin suffix {{wikt-lang|la|-um}}.

It is a reference to the peltate (shield-like) form of the plant's stigma.{{cite book |title=Some beautiful Indian Trees |last=Blatter |first=Ethelbert |author2=Millard, Walter Samuel |year=1977 |publisher=Bombay natural History Society |location=Mumbai |edition=2|orig-year=1937|pages=109–111 | quote = The generic name Peltophorum means "shield-bearing" (from the ancient Greek word {{lang|grc|πέλτη}} [{{transliteration|grc|pĕltē}}] "a small light shield") and refers to the peltate stigma.}}
