People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry

The People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry, known by the acronym NKTP, was founded in 1932 out of the Supreme Soviet of the National Economy and was responsible for all heavy industrial goods, including mining, machinery and defense goods.{{cite book|last1=Gregory|first1=Paul R.|title=The Political Economy of Stalinism: Evidence from the Soviet Secret Archives|date=2004|publisher=Cambridge University Press|isbn=9780521533676|page=154|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=hFHU5kaXhu8C&pg=PA154|language=en}}

The defense industry assets were separated in December 1936, with the creation of the People's Commissariat of the Defense Industry, and in August 1937 there was set up the People's Commissariat for Mechanical Engineering.{{cite book|last1=Lewis|first1=Robert A.|title=Science and Industrialization in the U.S.S.R.|date=2016|publisher=Springer|isbn=9781349037865|pages=61–65|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Hf3cDAAAQBAJ&pg=PA61|language=en}} In early 1939 the NKTP was divided into six separate commissariats.
