History
The site of the Civic Center includes the spot at Liberty Street and Jefferson Street, where Moses and Lucy Pettengill lived from 1836 to 1862; that house was part of the Underground Railroad and Moses was also an Underground Railroad "conductor". In 1862, the Pettingills moved out of downtown and to Moss Avenue, where the present Pettengill–Morron House was built in 1868. The downtown home was demolished in 1910 to make way for the Jefferson Hotel.{{cite web |url=https://www.peoriamagazines.com/as/2008/jan-feb/long-road-freedom |title=The Long Road to Freedom |last1=Thompson |first1=Katie |date=January–February 2008 |newspaper = Art & Society |publisher=Central Illinois Business Publishers, Inc. |access-date=April 24, 2019}} The hotel, in turn, was imploded in 1978 to make way for the Civic Center.{{cite web |url=https://www.peoriamagazines.com/aa/2002/oct/peorias-civic-center-20-years |title=Peoria's Civic Center 20 Years |last1=Phelps |first1=Tori |date=October 2002 |newspaper=Arts Alive! |publisher=Central Illinois Business Publishers, Inc. |access-date=April 24, 2019}}{{Cite web |last=Hatch |first=Danielle |date=2022-02-17 |title=In the 1960s, the plan to construct Civic Center was an effort to save Downtown Peoria |url=https://www.pjstar.com/story/news/history/2022/02/17/history-peoria-civic-center-planning-construction/6726099001/ |access-date=2023-10-07 |website=Peoria Journal Star |language=en-US}}
