The Peoria Lock and Dam is a historic lock and dam complex on the Illinois River at Creve Coeur, Illinois. The complex was built in 1938-39 as part of an effort to make the river navigable and establish a route for barges between Chicago and the Mississippi River.{{Cite web |last=Lynn |first=Greg |date=2017-05-19 |title=A Historic Complex |url=https://www.peoriamagazine.com/archive/ibi_article/2017/historic-complex/ |access-date=2023-09-18 |website=Peoria Magazine |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |last=Alani |first=Hannah |date=2022-02-02 |title='An incredible system': 1930s-era Peoria Lock and Dams included in $829 million for waterway improvements |url=https://www.wcbu.org/local-news/2022-02-02/an-incredible-system-1930s-era-peoria-lock-and-dams-included-in-829-million-for-waterway-improvements |access-date=2023-09-18 |website=WCBU Peoria |language=en}} The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed the complex; their influence is particularly evident in the dam's control station, as the State of Illinois designed most other dam control stations along the river. The lock has a standard {{convert|100|x|600|ft|adj=on}} chamber, similar to other locks on the river, and a vertical lift of {{convert|11|ft}}. The dam is {{convert|536|ft}} long and includes 108 wicket gates and a Tainter gate; it is one of two Illinois dams that still use wicket gates.{{Cite web |title=Peoria Lock and Dam |url=https://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation/Lock-and-Dam-Information/Peoria-Lock-and-Dam/ |access-date=2023-09-18 |website=www.mvr.usace.army.mil}} The control station is for the most part a large, functional building, though it has Art Deco surrounds at the main entrance. The district also contains an original maneuver boat designed to raise and lower the dam's wicket gates; the boat is still used and is one of four boats of its kind left in the United States.{{cite web|last1=Henning|first1=Barbara J.|title=National Register of Historic Places Registration Form: Peoria Lock and Dam Historic District|url=http://gis.hpa.state.il.us/pdfs/223449.pdf|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150927182928/http://gis.hpa.state.il.us/pdfs/223449.pdf|url-status=dead|archive-date=2015-09-27|publisher=Illinois Historic Preservation Agency|access-date=September 27, 2015|date=2001}}
