Perameles is a genus of marsupials of the order Peramelemorphia. They are referred to as long-nosed bandicoots or barred bandicoots.{{MSW3 Groves|pages=40|id=10900022}}{{cite web|title=Mikko's Phylogeny Archive – Peramelia|url=http://www.helsinki.fi/~mhaaramo/Metazoa/Deuterostoma/Chordata/Synapsida/Metatheria/Notometatheria/Peramelia.htm|access-date=2008-03-12}}

Perameles, or ‘pouched badger’, is a hybrid word, from the Greek {{transliteration|grc|pera}} (πήρα, ‘pouch, bag’) and the Latin {{lang|la|mēles}} (‘marten, badger’).{{OED|Perameles}}

More than half the known recent species of Perameles have been driven to extinction, although these extinct species were long considered conspecific with P. bougainville, a 2018 study determined them to be distinct species.Travouillon & Phillips (2018).
