In Greek mythology, Perses ({{IPAc-en|ˈ|p|ɜːr|s|i|z}} {{respell|PUR|seez}}; {{langx|grc|Πέρσης|Pérsēs|destroyer}}) is the son of the Titan Crius and Eurybia, and thus brother to Astraeus and Pallas. Ancient tradition records very little of Perses other than his marriage and offspring, his role largely being genealogical, existing merely to provide a parentage for other, more important figures.

Etymology

His name is derived from the Ancient Greek word perthō ({{lang|grc|πέρθω}} – "to sack", "to ravage", "to destroy").

Family

According to the Theogony, Perses was born to Crius, one of the original twelve Titans, and Eurybia.{{cite encyclopedia | encyclopedia = Brill's New Pauly | publisher = Brill Reference Online | url = https://referenceworks.brill.com/display/entries/NPOE/e915170.xml | doi = 10.1163/1574-9347_bnp_e915170 | last = Thurmann | first = Stephanie | location = Kiel | title = Perses | date = October 1, 2006 | editor-first1 = Hubert | issn = 1574-9347 | editor-last1 = Cancik | editor-first2 = Helmuth | editor-last2 = Schneider | access-date = December 27, 2024}} He had two brothers, Astraeus and Pallas.Hesiod, Theogony, [http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0130%3Acard%3D371 375].Apollodorus, Bibliotheca, [http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0022%3Atext%3DLibrary%3Abook%3D1%3Achapter%3D8 1.8].

Mythology

According to Timothy Gantz, Hesiod "oddly" describes Perses as "eminent among all men in wisdom."{{sfn|Gantz|1993|page=[https://archive.org/details/earlygreekmythgu0001gant/page/26/mode/2up?view=theater 26]}} He was wed to his cousin Asteria, the daughter of Phoebe and Coeus,Hesiod, Theogony, [http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0130%3Acard%3D404 404]. with whom he had one child, Hecate, honoured by the king of the gods Zeus above all others as the goddess of magic, crossroads, and witchcraft.{{sfn|Gantz|1993|page=[https://archive.org/details/earlygreekmythgu0001gant/page/26/mode/2up?view=theater 26]}} In a lesser-known tradition mentioned by Musaeus, the father of Hecate was Zeus himself;Musaeus as cited by a scholiast on Apollonius Rhodius's Argonautica [https://books.google.com/books?id=y5pxAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA72 3.467] Zeus kept Asteria as his mistress for some time before giving her to Perses.{{sfn|Fowler|2000|pages=[https://books.google.com/books?id=scd8AQAAQBAJ&pg=PA32 32–33]}}{{sfn|Diels|1907|page=[https://books.google.com/books?id=9_ZMAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA487 487]}}

He was sometimes confused with another Perses (the son of the sun-god Helios and the nymph Perse), who was made the father of Hecate in some versions.Diodorus Siculus, Historic Library [https://topostext.org/work/133#4.45.1 4.45.2]{{sfn|Avery|1962|page=[https://archive.org/details/newcenturyclassi00aver/page/852/mode/2up?view=theater 853]}} He might also be the same Perses who is the father of Chariclo, the wife of Chiron, in some versions.Scholia on Pindar [https://scaife.perseus.org/reader/urn:cts:greekLit:tlg5034.tlg001b.perseus-grc1:4.182 P.4.82]
