Origin of name

Sir Archibald Campbell, then Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, was born at Glen Lyon, Perthshire, Scotland. Another possible origin is that local Scotch settlers named it for the city of Perth, Scotland.{{cite book| last1=Ganong| first1=William F.|url=https://www.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.97004/41| access-date=12 April 2021| title=Additions and Corrections to Monographs on the Place-Nomenclature, Cartography, Historic Sites, Boundaries and Settlement-origins of the Province of New Brunswick| date=1906| publisher=Royal Society of Canada| page=41}}

History

Perth was erected in 1833 in Carleton County from Kent Parish.{{cite book| url=https://www.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.9_00913_48 | access-date=27 March 2021| title=Acts of the General Assembly of His Majesty's Province of New Brunswick, Passed in the Year 1833.| date=1833| publisher=Government of New Brunswick| location=Fredericton| pages=114–115| chapter=3 Wm. IV c. 17 An Act to divide the Parish of Kent, in the County of Carleton, into Five Towns or Parishes.}} The parish included all of modern Victoria County east of the Saint John River and south of the Grand Falls.

In 1850 Victoria County was erected from Carleton County; the new county line ran through Perth, removing part of the parish.{{cite book| url=https://www.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.9_00913_65 | access-date=27 March 2021| title=Acts of the General Assembly of Her Mjaesty's Province of New Brunswick, Passed in the Year 1850.| date=1850| publisher=Government of New Brunswick| location=Fredericton| pages=142–152, 145–149| chapter=13 Vic. c. 51 An Act to consolidate all the Laws now in force for the division of the Province into Counties, Towns and Parishes.}} Book was poorly proofread, resulting in title typo and reuse of page numbers 145–152.

In 1853 all of Perth north of the Tobique Indian Reserve was included in the newly erected Grand Falls Parish.{{cite book| url=https://www.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.9_00913_67 | access-date=27 March 2021| title=Acts of the General Assembly of Her Majesty's Province of New Brunswick, Passed in the Year 1852.| date=1852| publisher=Government of New Brunswick| location=Fredericton| page=55| chapter=15 Vic. c. 35 An Act to erect part of the Parish of Andover, the County of Victoria, into a separate Parish.}}

In 1854 the county line was moved to the pre-1850 southern line of Perth.{{cite book| url=https://www.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.9_02185 | access-date=27 March 2021| title=The Revised Statutes of New Brunswick Volume 1.| date=1854| publisher=Government of New Brunswick| location=Fredericton| pages=2–19| chapter=Chapter 1.}}

In 1864 the eastern part of Perth was included in the newly erected Gordon Parish.{{cite book| url=https://www.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.9_00913_78 | access-date=27 March 2021| title=Acts of the General Assembly of Her Majesty's Province of New Brunswick, Passed in the Month of April, 1863.| date=1863| publisher=Government of New Brunswick| location=Fredericton| page=101| chapter=26 Vic. c. 44 An Act to erect parts of the Parishes of Grand Falls, Perth, and Saint Leonard, in the County of Victoria, into a separate Town or Parish.}} Three months later the pre-1854 county line was restored.{{cite book| url=https://www.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.9_00913_79 | access-date=27 March 2021| title=Acts of the General Assembly of Her Majesty's Province of New Brunswick, Passed in the Month of April 1864.| date=1864| publisher=Government of New Brunswick| location=Fredericton| pages=50–51| chapter=27 Vic. c. 27 An Act to define the Boundaries between the Counties of Carleton and Victoria.}}
