Perth Soccer Club is an Australian professional soccer club based in West Perth, Western Australia. The club was founded in 1987 as the result of a merger between three local clubs, though its pre-merger history is regarded to be that of Perth Azzurri after taking full control of the club in 2002. Perth currently competes in the National Premier Leagues Western Australia, with matches played at Dorrien Gardens.{{cite web|url=http://www.footballwest.com.au/clubs/perth-soccer-club-inc/|title=Perth Soccer Club Inc|publisher=Football West|access-date=26 June 2009|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110131193551/http://www.footballwest.com.au/clubs/perth-soccer-club-inc|archive-date=31 January 2011|url-status=dead}}

History

Perth SC was formed in 1987 as a result of a merger of Perth Azzurri (formed 1948), East Fremantle Tricolore (formed 1953) and Balcatta Etna (formed 1977). After numerous meetings and discussions the new club known as, named Perth Italia Soccer Club, was formed.{{cite web|url=http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/Clubs/P/PerthSC.html|title=Perth SC Club Page|publisher=ozfootball.net|access-date=26 June 2009|archive-date=25 January 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200125194135/http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/Clubs/P/PerthSC.html|url-status=live}}{{cite journal|doi=10.1080/14660970802472684|last=Moore|first=Philip|date=January 2009|title=Soccer in the west: the world game in Australia's western periphery|journal=Soccer & Society|volume=10|issue=1|pages=84–95|s2cid=134427629 |issn=1466-0970}} Of the three clubs that merged, Perth Azzurri was the most successful club having won 11 league titles.{{cite web|url=https://www.rsssf.org/tablesa/aus-regchamp.html|title=Australia – List of Regional Champions|publisher=Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation|access-date=2 July 2009|archive-date=7 December 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191207180800/http://www.rsssf.com/tablesa/aus-regchamp.html#woz|url-status=live}} Between 1953 and 1987 East Fremantle Tricolore also won six league titles, including three straight wins between 1963 and 1965. Balcatta Etna had the least success, with only one league title.

The club had its beginnings when a group of boys joined with the initial intention of starting an Australian rules football club.{{cite journal|last=Moore|first=David|author2=Miller, William J|year=1996|title=The Lads in Action: Social Process in an Urban Youth Subculture|journal=Journal of Contemporary Ethnography|publisher=Sage Publications|location=Newbury Park, California|volume=24|issue=4|issn=0891-2416}}{{cite book|last=Krieder|first=Richard|title=A Soccer Century|publisher=SportsWest Media|year=1996|pages=52|isbn=978-0-646-29376-9}} The club faced friction from the footballing establishment which disapproved of Azzurri's passionate style of play.

Representatives from all three clubs strongly contributed in establishing the finest club and facilities in Western Australia. In the late 1980s the club registered the name Perth United in anticipation of joining the National Soccer League.{{cite book|last=Brabazon|first=Tara|title=Tracing the Jack|publisher=UNSW Press|year=2000|pages=132|isbn=978-0-86840-699-2}}{{cite web|url=http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/NSLclubs/PGHist.html|title=History of Perth soccer|last=Howe|first=Andrew|publisher=ozfootball.net|access-date=26 June 2009|archive-date=31 July 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200731011420/http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/NSLclubs/PGHist.html|url-status=live}} However the club never managed to join the national league.

In 1991 Balcatta Etna left the merged club. In 1995 it was decided to change the name to Perth Soccer Club in order to broaden its appeal to a more mainstream audience.{{cite book|title=Azzurri, 1948–1998: 50 Golden Years|publisher=Perth Soccer Club|year=1998}}{{cite web|url=http://perthsoccerclub.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1&Itemid=28|title=Welcome to the Perth Soccer Club|publisher=Perth Soccer Club|access-date=26 June 2009|archive-date=31 July 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200731011553/http://perthsoccerclub.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1&Itemid=28|url-status=live}} In 2002 Azzurri fully merged with Perth SC to become the club it is today,{{cite web|url=http://perthsoccerclub.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=39&Itemid=73|title=Azzurri Trophy Room|publisher=Perth Soccer Club|access-date=2 July 2009|archive-date=4 March 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304065611/http://perthsoccerclub.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=39&Itemid=73|url-status=live}} with East Fremantle Tricolore leaving the merged club to play in their own right in 2004.
