During his early tenure at Stanford, Sarnow and his research team identified miR-122 as a necessary mechanism to cause the hepatitis C virus uses to replicate and grow.{{cite web |title=Stanford scientist to discuss new approach to treating hepatitis C virus |url=https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2006/04/stanford-scientist-to-discuss-new-approach-to-treating-hepatitis-c-virus |publisher=Stanford University |access-date=November 6, 2021 |date=April 5, 2006}} He was also appointed an editor of the Virology Journal and elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2010, Sarnow was appointed chair of microbiology and immunology at Stanford.{{cite web |last1=Goldman |first1=Bruce |title=Sarnow appointed as new chair of microbiology and immunology |url=https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2010/11/sarnow-appointed-as-new-chair-of-microbiology-and-immunology.html |publisher=Stanford University |access-date=November 6, 2021 |date=November 22, 2010}}
