The bay was named in 1924 for U.S. Census Bureau employee Ivan Petrof, whose reports of his travels in the late 19th century are a valuable source of Alaska history for that period.{{Cite web |title=Escort Carrier Petrof Bay (CVE-80) |url=https://ww2db.com/ship_spec.php?ship_id=460 |access-date=2025-01-09 |website=WW2DB}}
