Murder
Evidence at Partin's trial showed that he picked up Ashbrook as she hitchhiked along U.S. Highway 19 in Florida on July 31, 2002. He and Ashbrook spent the day fishing and swimming with Partin's daughter, then 6, before returning to the New Port Richey house where he and his daughter were living. Prosecutors think Ashbrook was killed between 9 p.m. and midnight. The next morning, workers found her body in woods off Shady Hills Road. She had been strangled, her throat gashed and her neck broken. Nine days after the discovery, Partin dropped his daughter off at the home of a foster mother, Jean Prestridge, later known as Jean Edenfield, in Wauchula and left the state. His daughter Patrisha's two sisters lived with this foster mother in her Wauchula home. Jean kept Patrisha for five days but then gave her up to foster care.{{cite news|author=Jamal Thalji|date=March 13, 2008|title=On trial for murder, Partin mocks sheriff with job bid|newspaper=Tampa Bay Times|url=http://www.sptimes.com/2008/03/13/Pasco/On_trial_for_murder__.shtml|url-status=dead|access-date=January 6, 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080315195404/http://www.sptimes.com/2008/03/13/Pasco/On_trial_for_murder__.shtml|archive-date=March 15, 2008|quote=She was 7 when she saw Partin and Ashbrook together the day before the 16-year-old was found dead on August. 1, 2002. Lt. Dan Barrago testified that Partin wanted to know the difference between first- and second-degree murder during an interview following his arrest. Partin went on to describe how he worked as a hustler, letting gay men pick him up and take him home so he would have a place to sleep and take a shower the next morning, the detective testified. He met his victim, Gary Thorne, while playing pool at a lounge, Barrago recalled Partin telling him. When they got to Thorne's home and Thorne began making advances, Partin said, he first choked and then strangled the victim with a telephone cord, Barrago testified.}} Thorne was strangled with a telephone cord in his home. He was convicted of second-degree murder, armed robbery and armed burglary in 1989 and sentenced to 17 years in prison. Partin was released from prison on August 1, 1995.
