Phrynus is a genus of whip spiders found in tropical and subtropical regions, mostly in the new world.{{cite journal |author=Diomedes Quintero, Jr. |year=1981 |title=The amblypygid genus Phrynus in the Americas (Amblypygi, Phrynidae) |journal=Journal of Arachnology |volume=9 |issue=2 |pages=117–166 |url=http://www.americanarachnology.org/JoA_free/JoA_v9_n2/JoA_v9_p117.pdf |url-status=dead |jstor=3704962}}

Appearance

Like other species of the order Amblypygi, species of the genus Phrynus are dorso-ventrally flattened arachnids with elongate, antenniform front legs used to navigate their environment and communicate with conspecifics.{{cite journal | last1=Chapin | first1=KJ | last2=Hebets | first2=EA | year=2016 |title=Behavioral ecology of amblypygids |journal=Journal of Arachnology |volume=44 |issue=1 |pages=1–14| doi=10.1636/V15-62.1 | s2cid=29923727 | url=http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1056&context=bioscihebets }} Individuals capture prey using raptorial pedipalps. Phrynus species vary in size, from the small Phrynus marginemaculatus to the larger Phrynus longipes. At least one species of Phrynus is territorial and cannibalistic (Phrynus longipes).{{Cite journal | author1=Chapin KJ | author2=Hill-Lindsay S | year=2015 | title=Territoriality evidenced by asymmetric intruder-holder motivation in an amblypygid | journal=Behavioural Processes | volume=122 | pages=110–115| doi=10.1016/j.beproc.2015.11.014 | pmid=26616673 | s2cid=37584495 }} Phrynus is a New World genus, found from the southern United States to northern South America; the sole exception is Phrynus exsul from Indonesia.{{Cite journal|last1=Rahmadi|first1=Cahyo|last2=Harvey|first2=Mark S.|date=2007|title=The female of Phrynus exsul (Amblypygi, Phrynidae) from Indonesia|journal=Journal of Arachnology|volume=35|issue=1|pages=137–142|doi=10.1636/SH06-21.1|s2cid=55125356|issn=0161-8202|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/part/228997}}File:Phrynus barbadensis.jpg
