Physalis angulata is an erect herbaceous annual plant belonging to the nightshade family Solanaceae. Its leaves are dark green and roughly oval, often with tooth shapes around the edge. The flowers are five-sided and pale yellow; the yellow-orange fruits are borne inside a balloon-like calyx. The exact native range is uncertain.{{Cite web |title=Factsheet - Physalis angulata (Wild Gooseberry) |url=https://keys.lucidcentral.org/keys/v3/eafrinet/weeds/key/weeds/Media/Html/Physalis_angulata_(Wild_Gooseberry).htm |access-date=2024-01-31 |website=keys.lucidcentral.org}}{{Cite report |url=http://www.cabidigitallibrary.org/doi/10.1079/cabicompendium.40711 |title=Physalis angulata (cutleaf groundcherry) |last=Travlos |first=Ilias |date=2022-01-07 |doi=10.1079/cabicompendium.40711 |language=en|doi-access=free }}{{Cite web |title=Physalis angulata |url=https://keyserver.lucidcentral.org/weeds/data/media/Html/physalis_angulata.htm |access-date=2024-01-31 |website=keyserver.lucidcentral.org}} The species may be naturally endemic to Australia{{Cite web |title=Factsheet - Physalis |url=http://www.flora.sa.gov.au/efsa/lucid/Solanaceae/Solanaceae%20species/key/Australian%20Solanaceae%20species/Media/Html/Physalis.htm |access-date=2024-01-31 |website=www.flora.sa.gov.au}} or the Americas{{Cite web |title=Physalis angulata L. {{!}} Plants of the World Online {{!}} Kew Science |url=http://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:195334-2 |access-date=2024-01-31 |website=Plants of the World Online |language=en}} or the native range may encompass both the Americas and Australia.{{Cite web |title=NT Flora |url=http://eflora.nt.gov.au/factsheet?id=24630 |access-date=2024-01-31 |website=eflora.nt.gov.au}} It is now widely distributed and naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
