Physics Essays is a quarterly journal supposedly covering theoretical and experimental physics. It was established in 1988 and the editor-in-chief is Emilio Panarella.

The journal has a reputation for being a "free forum where extravagant views on physics (in particular, those involving parapsychology) are welcome".{{cite journal |last1=Sepetyi |first1=Dmytro |title=Quantum Mechanics and Consciousness: No Evidence for Idealism |journal=Filosofska Dumka |date=2018 |issue=4 |pages=95–105 |url=https://dumka.philosophy.ua/index.php/fd/article/view/430 |language=en }} The journal has been accused of charging authors for publication without disclosing the fees up front.{{cite journal |last=King |first=L. In the 1990s, the journal was published by University of Toronto Press. Beginning in 2009, and for some period of time, the journal was affiliated with the American Institute of Physics, which managed subscriptions.{{cite web |title=Publishing Matters |url=https://www.aip.org/sites/default/files/aipcorp/aipmatters/2008-10-06.pdf |work=AIP Matters |date=2008-10-06 |access-date=2023-07-10 |publisher=American Institute of Physics}}{{cite web |title=Price List 2009 |publisher=American Institute of Physics |date=2013-08-06 |url=http://www.aip.org/journal_catalog/AIP2009NonmemberRateFixed.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130806154811/http://www.aip.org/journal_catalog/AIP2009NonmemberRateFixed.pdf |archive-date=2013-08-06 |url-status=dead |access-date=2023-07-10|page=13}}{{cite web |url=http://journals.aip.org/aip_2011_prices.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111127211233/http://journals.aip.org/aip_2011_prices.pdf |title=Price List 2011 |publisher=AIP Publishing |page=11 |archive-date=2011-11-27 |url-status=dead}}{{cite web |title=Price List 2012 |publisher=AIP Publishing |date=2012-05-04 |url=http://www.aip.org/journal_catalog/AIP2012NonmemberRateFixed.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120504060300/http://www.aip.org/journal_catalog/AIP2012NonmemberRateFixed.pdf |archive-date=2012-05-04 |url-status=dead |access-date=2023-07-10 |page=10}}

In 2003, the journal published a paper describing Randell Mills' hydrino theory, which is at odds with quantum mechanics and widely rejected by physicists.{{cite web |last=Jha |first=Alok |title=Fuel's paradise? Abstracting and indexing

The journal is indexed and abstracted in the following bibliographic databases:

The journal was indexed in Current Contents/Physical, Chemical, and Earth Sciences and the Science Citation Index Expanded until it was dropped in 2015.{{cite news |url=http://ip-science.thomsonreuters.com/cgi-bin/jrnlst/jlchange.cgi?Full=PHYSICS+ESSAYS |title=JOURNAL CHANGE: PHYSICS ESSAYS: Dropped |work=IP & Science - Thomson Reuters |date=2015 |accessdate=2015-09-28 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150928232422/http://ip-science.thomsonreuters.com/cgi-bin/jrnlst/jlchange.cgi?Full=PHYSICS+ESSAYS |archive-date=2015-09-28}} Its last impact factor, according to the 2014 Journal Citation Reports, was 0.245 for 2013.{{cite book |year=2014 |chapter=Physics Essays |title=2013 Journal Citation Reports |title-link=Journal Citation Reports |publisher=Thomson Reuters |edition=Science |via=Web of Science}} Scopus similarly dropped its coverage in 2017.{{cite web |url=https://www.scopus.com/sourceid/29201 |title=Source details: Physics Essays |publisher=Elsevier |work=Scopus Preview |access-date=2023-06-27}} As of 2022, it is included in the Emerging Sources Citation Index with a 2023 impact factor of 0.6.{{cite book |year=2024 |chapter=Physics Essays |title=2023 Journal Citation Reports |publisher=Clarivate |edition=Science |via=Web of Science |title-link=Journal Citation Reports}}

In 2024, the Norwegian Scientific Index downgraded the journal from a level-1 journal to level 0, meaning that publication there no longer counts in the official academic career system or towards public funding of research institutions.{{cite web |url=https://kanalregister.hkdir.no/publiseringskanaler/KanalTidsskriftInfo.action?id=445805 |title=Journal info: Physics Essays |website=Norwegian Scientific Index |access-date=2024-07-24}}
