History

The origins of the company can be traced back to William Pickering (1796–1854), who set up as an antiquarian bookseller and publisher in 1820. After his death, the business was carried on by his son, Basil Montagu Pickering.{{cite ODNB|url=http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/22213 |title=Pickering, William (1796–1854) |year=2004 |doi=10.1093/ref:odnb/22213 |accessdate=2014-03-14}} On his death, in 1878, it was purchased by Andrew Chatto (1841–1913), one of the founding partners of Chatto and Windus.{{cite web|url=http://www.open.ac.uk/researchprojects/makingbritain/content/chatto-windus

By the early twentieth century Pickering & Chatto was solely concerned with antiquarian book selling.{{cite ODNB |url=http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/47445 |title=Chatto, Andrew (1840–1913) |year=2004 |doi=10.1093/ref:odnb/47445 |accessdate=2014-05-09|last1=Weedon |first1=Alexis }}{{cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/05/world/europe/william-rees-mogg-former-editor-of-the-times-of-london-dies-at-84.html?_r=0 |title=William Rees-Mogg, Ex-Editor of The Times of London, Dies at 84 |work =The New York Times |date=2013-01-04 |accessdate=2014-03-14}}
