Career
Magistretti studied medicine at University of Geneva, and received his diploma in 1977 and his medical doctor degree in 1979 for his thesis on Etude de la liaison spécifique du ³H-spiropéridol dans la fraction membranaire de la rétine de mammifère supervised by Michel Schorderet.{{Cite web|title=Etude de la liaison spécifique du ³H-spiropéridol dans la fraction membranaire de la rétine de mammifère : son intérêt pour l'évaluation de l'affinité dopaminergique des substances psychotropes|url=https://slsp-unige.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/fulldisplay?&context=L&vid=41SLSP_UGE:VU1&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&tab=41SLSP_UGE_MyInst_CI&docid=alma991003299149705502|access-date=2021-04-12|website=slsp-unige.primo.exlibrisgroup.com|language=en}} He then joined Floyd E. Bloom's A.V. Davis Center for Behavioral Neurobiology Laboratory at Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla and enrolled in a graduate program for neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego. In 1982, he received his PhD for a thesis on Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide: A Regulator of Cellular Homeostasis in Cerebral Cortex co-supervised by William Shoemaker.{{Cite thesis|title=Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide: a regulator of cellular homeostasis in cerebral cortex|url=http://roger.ucsd.edu/record=b1963213~S9|date=1982|first=Pierre Julius|last=Magistretti}} Until 1987 he was Maître Assistant (postdoctoral researcher) at University of Geneva's department of pharmacology and worked on the synergistic interactions between vasoactive intestinal peptide and norepinephrine in forming cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP).{{Cite journal|date=1985-01-01|title=VIP neurons in the neocortex|url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0166223685900050|journal=Trends in Neurosciences|language=en|volume=8|pages=7–8|doi=10.1016/0166-2236(85)90005-0|issn=0166-2236|last1=Magistretti|first1=Pierre J.|last2=Morrison|first2=John H.|s2cid=53177354|url-access=subscription}}{{Cite journal|last1=Schaad|first1=Nicolas C.|last2=Schorderet|first2=Michel|last3=Magistretti|first3=Pierre J.|date=August 1987|title=Prostaglandins and the synergism between VIP and noradrenaline in the cerebral cortex|url=https://www.nature.com/articles/328637a0|journal=Nature|language=en|volume=328|issue=6131|pages=637–640|doi=10.1038/328637a0|pmid=3039374|bibcode=1987Natur.328..637S|s2cid=4332351|issn=1476-4687|url-access=subscription}}
