Pimenta is a genus of flowering plants in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae described as a genus in 1821.Lindley, John. 1821. Collectanea Botanica 4: sub t. 19[http://www.tropicos.org/Name/40008985 Tropicos, Pimenta Lindl.] It is native to Central and South America, Mexico, and the West Indies.[http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/namedetail.do?name_id=156124 Kew World Checklist of Selected Plant Families]

Well-known species include allspice (P. dioica) and the West Indian bay tree (P. racemosa). The name is mostly probably derived from the Portuguese word "pimenta", with the same meaning of the Spanish word pimienta, meaning "peppercorn." It refers to the berries of P. dioica.{{cite book |first=E. A |last=Weiss |title=Spice Crops |publisher=CABI |year=2002 |isbn=978-0-85199-605-9 |page=122}}
