Ping opera

Pingju or Ping opera ({{zh|s=评剧|p=píngjù}}) is a form of Chinese opera from northern China.
History
Pingju originated in Tangshan, Hebei, near the city of Tianjin.{{citation |contribution-url=http://www1.chinaculture.org/library/2008-01/31/content_127390.htm |contribution=China Pingju Festival |title=China Culture }}. Among all China's regional operas, it was the most famous in the Republican period for its passionate performances and romantic plots.{{sfnp|Cheng|2002|p=8}}
Movies based upon and incorporating Pingju include Zhang Shichuan's 1936 Red Begonia {{nowrap|(t {{lang|zh|{{linktext|海棠|紅}}}},}} {{nowrap|s {{lang|zh|{{linktext|海棠|红}}}},}} Hǎitáng Hóng), starring Bai Yushuang.{{sfnp|Cheng|2002|p=11}}

Bai Yushuang was known as the "Queen of Pingju".
