Pinoy step
{{Short description|Basketball move}}
Pinoy step is a basketball move in which an offensive player picks up their dribble, quickly simulates taking a shot the while going towards the basket then proceeds to make an actual shot with the last remaining legal step. It is intended to allow the ball handler to get past a defender and take a more advantageous shot.{{cite web|author=Raul Maningat|title=Pinoy Step in the NBA?|url=https://www.onesports.ph/nba/article/8733/pinoy-step-in-the-nba|work=One Sports PH|date=4 January 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230922103951/https://www.onesports.ph/nba/article/8733/pinoy-step-in-the-nba|archive-date=22 September 2023}}{{cite web|author=Stephen Beslic|title=Zach LaVine explains habit of using the 'Pinoy Step' move|url=https://www.si.com/nba/bulls/news/zach-lavine-explains-habit-of-using-the-pinoy-step-move|date=5 April 2023|work=Sports Illustrated|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231224020312/https://www.si.com/nba/bulls/news/zach-lavine-explains-habit-of-using-the-pinoy-step-move|archive-date=24 December 2023}}
Background
Some media attribute the move to basketball players in the Philippines. Fans attribute the combination of gather step and pump fake as the Filipino version of Euro step before going airborne. It can be especially effective when a shorter ball handler takes on a taller defender. As a result, the phrase "Pinoy step" was given with the first word being the colloquial demonym for Filipinos. Anecdotal reports give credit to Kiefer Ravena and Ricci Rivero for popularizing it.{{cite web|author=John Micheal Agustin|title=Who started the infamous 'Pinoy Step'|url=https://www.spieltimes.com/sports/who-started-the-infamous-pinoy-step/|date=14 October 2023|work=Spiel Times|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230922103951/https://www.onesports.ph/nba/article/8733/pinoy-step-in-the-nba|archive-date=22 September 2023}}{{cite web|author=Marin Grabic|title=How Mikal Bridges' new signature move is helping him score more in the paint|url=https://www.netsdaily.com/2023/12/11/23991506/the-history-of-the-pinoy-step-mikal-bridges-new-favorite-move|work=Sports Illustrated|date=4 December 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231215215521/https://www.si.com/nba/nets/news/how-mikal-bridges-new-signature-move-is-helping-him-score-more-in-the-paint|archive-date=15 December 2023}} In a 2023 SB Nation article, Lucas Kaplan wrote Ravena is "credited as one of the pioneers of the move, and it's been in his bag since high school," adding "the Pinoy is unmistakably the product of amateur and professional ballers in the Philippines over the past decade."{{cite web|author=Lucas Kaplan|title=The history of ‘Pinoy step,’ Mikal Bridges’ new favorite move|url=https://www.netsdaily.com/2023/12/11/23991506/the-history-of-the-pinoy-step-mikal-bridges-new-favorite-move|work=NetsDaily.com|date=11 December 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231215055528/https://www.netsdaily.com/2023/12/11/23991506/the-history-of-the-pinoy-step-mikal-bridges-new-favorite-move|archive-date=15 December 2023}}{{cite web|author=Raul Maningat|title=Kiefer Ravena gets linked to story about NBA star Mikal Bridges' 'new favorite move'|url=https://www.onesports.ph/more-sports/article/17888/how-nba-star-mikal-bridges-filipino-hooper-kiefer-ravena-are-bonded-by-basketball|date=18 December 2023|access-date=24 December 2023}}
