History
Concerned about the world's burgeoning nuclear arsenals, San Francisco philanthropist and activist Sally Lilienthal founded the organization in 1981. Since it was founded, Ploughshares has made grants totaling nearly $100 million to hundreds of people and organizations around the world.[https://books.google.com/books?id=oO6pwt8016QC&dq=%22Ploughshares+Fund%22&pg=SL265-PA19 Nuclear Shadowboxing: Cold War Redux], A. DeVolpi. Lilienthal died in October 2006, at the age of 87, while still serving as Ploughshares Fund's president.{{Cite web|url=http://www.ploughshares.org/who-we-are/history/sally-lilienthal|title=Sally Lilienthal}}
In 2008, the Board of Directors appointed Joseph Cirincione as Ploughshares Fund's president, the same year that the organization opened an office in Washington, DC.{{Cite web|url=https://aworldthatjustmightwork.com/2009/04/qa-joseph-cirincione-president-of-ploughshares-fund-and-author/|title=Q&A: JOSEPH CIRINCIONE, President of PLOUGHSHARES FUND and Author – Terrence McNally|date=April 16, 2009}}[https://www.ploughshares.org/sites/default/files/resources/PSF_Newsletter_Spring_08.pdf Spring 2008 Newsletter], Ploughshares Fund Cirincione stepped down as president in July 2020 and was succeeded by Dr. Emma Belcher, formerly of the MacArthur Foundation.{{Cite web|url=https://ploughshares.org/issues-analysis/article/ploughshares-fund-names-dr-emma-belcher-next-foundation-president|title=Ploughshares Fund names Dr. Emma Belcher as next Foundation President|date=June 1, 2020|website=Ploughshares Fund}}
