Government policy
In its 2021–22 budget, the province of Saskatchewan announced that all electric vehicles will be subject to an annual road usage fee of $150 per-year, the first such fee in Canada, on the justification electric vehicles do not contribute to fuel taxes that are used to fund highway maintenance. The tax has faced criticism from electric vehicle owners and from Regina mayor Sandra Masters for deterring electric vehicle ownership.{{cite news|url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/electric-vehicle-tax-saskatchewan-1.5979648|title=Drivers say Sask.'s move to become first province to tax electric vehicles is political|first=Mickey|last=Djuric|date=2021-04-08|access-date=2022-05-15|work=CBC News}}{{cite news|url=https://electrek.co/2021/10/04/canadian-group-satirizes-saskatchewans-dumb-ev-tax-by-suggesting-a-sidewalk-tax/|date=2021-10-04|access-date=2022-04-20|title=Canadian group satirizes Saskatchewan's dumb EV tax by suggesting a sidewalk tax|first=Jameson|last=Dow|work=Electrek}}{{Cite web|title=Saskatchewan electric vehicle owners hold rally opposing new provincial tax|url=https://globalnews.ca/news/7751921/sask-electric-vehicle-rally-tax/|access-date=2021-04-13|website=Global News|language=en-US}}{{Cite web|date=2021-04-09|title=While Sask. taxes EV owners, some Canadian provinces are offering cash|url=https://regina.ctvnews.ca/while-sask-taxes-ev-owners-some-canadian-provinces-are-offering-cash-1.5380138|access-date=2021-04-13|website=CTV News Regina|language=en}}{{Cite web|last=Biber|first=Francois|date=2021-04-06|title=Environmental economist says Sask.'s new electric vehicle fee is 'mind-boggling'|url=https://saskatoon.ctvnews.ca/environmental-economist-says-sask-s-new-electric-vehicle-fee-is-mind-boggling-1.5376627|access-date=2021-04-13|website=CTV News Saskatoon|language=en}} The fee came into force on October 1, 2021.{{Cite web|last=Masson|first=Emmanuel|date=2021-10-01|title=Conduire une voiture électrique est maintenant plus cher en Saskatchewan|url=https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/1828645/frais-enregistrement-voiture-electrique-assurance|access-date=2021-10-01|website=Radio-Canada.ca|language=fr-ca}}
