Synthesis

Dissolution of metallic polonium in concentrated nitric acid:{{cn|date=November 2023}}

Physical properties

Polonium(IV) nitrate forms white{{cite book |last1=Schweitzer |first1=George K. |last2=Pesterfield |first2=Lester L. |title=The Aqueous Chemistry of the Elements |date=14 January 2010 |publisher=Oxford University Press |isbn=978-0-19-974219-6 |page=243 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=-TNhhlGcCzwC&q=%22Po%28NO3%294%22+polonium&pg=PA243 |access-date=20 August 2021 |language=en}} or colorless crystals.{{cite book |title=Inorganic Chemistry |date=2012 |publisher=PHI Learning Pvt. Chemical properties

It disproportionates in aqueous weakly acidic nitric acid solutions:

:\mathsf{ 2 Po(NO_3)_4 + 2H_2O \ \xrightarrow{}\ PoO_2(NO_3)_2\downarrow + Po^{{2+}} + 2NO_3^- + 4HNO_3 }

The polonium(II) ion (Po2+) is then oxidized by nitric acid to polonium(IV).
