Taxonomy

Pomacea columellaris was originally described as Ampullaria columellaris by Augustus Addison Gould in 1848, based on a holotype shell collected during the United States Exploring Expedition from 1838-1842.{{Cite journal|last1=H. Shell description

The species has a heavy, oval shell with a sharp spire.{{Cite web|title=Pomacea columellaris (Gould, 1848)|url=https://www.applesnail.net/content/species/pomacea_columellaris.htm|access-date=2021-09-12|website=www.applesnail.net}} Its operculum is corneous and able to retract inside the shell's aperture.{{Cite journal|date=1925|title=Studies in Ampullaria|journal=Nature|language=en|volume=116|issue=2912|pages=275|doi=10.1038/116275a0|bibcode=1925Natur.116Q.275.|s2cid=4136804|issn=1476-4687|doi-access=free}} They lack an umbilicus and are often yellow in color.

Distribution
