History
File:Port Chester station postcard.jpg
The New York and New Haven Railroad laid tracks through Port Chester in the late-1840s. The current station building was constructed in 1890 by its successor, the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. Between 1929 and 1937[http://nywbry.com/nywbrr/station_portchester.php Port Chester NYW&B Station (New York, Westchester and Boston Railway website)]{{Dead link|date=January 2025 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} it was located across Westchester Avenue from the terminal station of the Port Chester Branch of the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway. Today that former station is the home of the Girtman Memorial Church of the Living God.[https://www.facebook.com/pages/Girtman-Memorial-Church-of-the-Living-God/232577803510580 Girtman Memorial Church (Facebook Page)]{{Cite web |url=http://ny.existingstations.com/archive/651.jpg |title=2000 Walter Hahn Photo of former Port Chester NYW&B Station (Existing Railroad Stations in Westchester County, New York) |access-date=January 4, 2015 |archive-date=March 4, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304053215/http://ny.existingstations.com/archive/651.jpg |url-status=dead }}
As with all New Haven Line stations in Westchester County, the station became a Penn Central station upon acquisition by Penn Central in 1969, and eventually became part of the MTA's Metro-North Railroad in 1983. A restoration project was carried out in 2009.{{cite press release |publisher=Metro-North Railroad |date=July 8, 2009 |title=Metro-North to Begin Major Station Improvements at Port Chester and Rye |url=http://mta.info/mta/news/releases/?agency=mnr&en=090708-MNR26 |access-date=February 21, 2010 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101218022244/http://mta.info/mta/news/releases/?agency=mnr&en=090708-MNR26 |archive-date=December 18, 2010}} In late 2017 an elevator was opened on the Westchester Avenue side of the station for access to the Northbound platform.{{Cite news|last=Rom|first=Gabriel|date=December 1, 2017|url=https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/2017/12/01/port-chester-train-station-elevator-now-open/911391001/|title=Port Chester train station elevator now open|work=Rockland/Westchester Journal News}} The station building hosts a restaurant.{{Cite news|last=Muchnick|first=Jeanne|date=April 30, 2018|url=https://www.lohud.com/story/life/food/restaurants/2018/04/30/new-restaurants-coming-tarrytown-port-chester-train-stations/563937002/|title=New restaurants coming to Tarrytown, Port Chester train stations|work=Rockland/Westchester Journal News}}
Under the 2015–2019 Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Plan, the station, along with four other Metro-North Railroad stations, received a complete overhaul as part of the Enhanced Station Initiative. Updates included cellular service, Wi-Fi, USB charging stations, interactive service advisories, and maps.{{cite web|url=http://www.mta.info/press-release/metro-north/metro-north-railroad-make-design-improvements-five-stations-under-enhanced|title=Metro-North Railroad to Make Design Improvements to Five Stations Under Enhanced Stations Initiative Program|date=December 14, 2017|publisher=MTA|access-date=December 17, 2017|archive-date=June 14, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180614071602/http://www.mta.info/press-release/metro-north/metro-north-railroad-make-design-improvements-five-stations-under-enhanced|url-status=dead}} The renovations at Port Chester station cost $13.2 million and were completed by the end of February 2019.{{Cite web|url=http://web.mta.info/mta/news/books/pdf/190520_1400_CPOC.pdf|title=Capital Program Oversight Committee Meeting|date=May 20, 2019|access-date=May 19, 2019|publisher=Metropolitan Transportation Authority}}{{rp|62}}
