• 1904 – The first underground line of the New York City Subway opens; the system is now the largest in the United States, and one of the largest in the world.
• 1907 – Union Station in Washington, D.C., opens.

• 2003 – The fleet of Siemens trains is returned to M>Train (Melbourne, Australia) service, some minus livery.
• 2004 – The North American rail labor union Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes votes to merge with the Teamsters.

• 1819 – Henry B. Plant, president of the Plant System of railroads (d. 1899).

• 1945 – George Hughes, Chief Mechanical Engineer for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 1904-1922, the London and North Western Railway 1922-1923 and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway 1925-1931, dies (b. 1865).
