Attack on Wikipedia

Sources agree that what happened had the appearance of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. How it happened — Heise.de says reportedly IoT was involved [https://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Massiver-DDOS-Angriff-auf-Wikipedia-4516131.html]] and a newly created Twitter account (that account would be [https://twitter.com/UKDrillas] according to Netblocks) claimed having wanted to "test new devices" — is not determined as of yet. We've had some disagreement on the scope of the attack. While other sources, notably Netblocks.org [https://netblocks.org/reports/wikipedia-disrupted-globally-in-apparent-denial-of-service-attack-RyjoqY8g] have it that the U.S. was also affected ({{tq|"in two phases, with the first briefly causing high latencies in the Americas from 6:00 p.m. UTC, and the second resulting in more severe outages across Western, Central and Eastern Europe, with disruptions also affecting the Middle East and South Asia"}}), our current two sources, The Independent [https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/wikipedia-down-not-working-google-stopped-page-loading-encyclopedia-a9095236.html] and Deutsche Welle [https://www.dw.com/en/malicious-attack-takes-wikipedia-offline-in-germany/a-50335521] have what I resume as "in Europe and parts of the Middle East" (The Independent: {{tq|"for users across Europe, and a number of places in the Middle East"}}). According to Netblocks.org, the attack was over on Saturday 02:40 UTC [https://twitter.com/netblocks/status/1170174414840901632]. TechCrunch.com [https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/07/wikipedia-blames-malicious-ddos-attack-after-site-goes-down-across-europe-middle-east/] and The Independent have Downdetector.com [https://downdetector.com/status/wikipedia/news/265533-problems-at-wikipedia-3] [https://downdetector.com/status/wikipedia/news/265632-problems-at-wikipedia] as a source. [https://twitter.com/WikimediaDE/status/1170077481447186432 This] is the statement from m:Wikimedia Deutschland on Twitter and [https://wikimediafoundation.org/news/2019/09/07/malicious-attack-on-wikipedia-what-we-know-and-what-were-doing/ this] is the statement on the Wikimedia Foundation main web page.
