Sources agree that what happened had the appearance of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. How it happened — Heise.de says reportedly IoT was involved [https://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Massiver-DDOS-Angriff-auf-Wikipedia-4516131.html]] and a newly created Twitter account (that account would be [https://twitter.com/UKDrillas] according to Netblocks) claimed having wanted to "test new devices" — is not determined as of yet. We've had some disagreement on the scope of the attack.
