Intro length

Does anyone else think the intro is far too long? It's longer, often far longer, than similar intros in other portals. The problem is it hides all the other content; it looks not like a normal portal page but like an oddly decorated article with all the other content relegate to end sections, like the See Also, Category and navigation footers on a normal article.

I tried [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Mathematics/Intro&diff=592878056&oldid=565202890 remedying this] a while ago but it was [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Mathematics/Intro&diff=592934683&oldid=592878056 reverted] without explanation by {{U|Jitse Niesen}}. Rather than re-revert I thought it best to try and get some feedback on it; not sure why it's taken a year to get round to it, I guess as portals are always low activity and slow changing so it never seemed a high priority.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 20:01, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

:Yes, I agree that the intro box is too long. If someone visits the page using an ordinary-sized monitor, they'll only see the intro. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:00, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

::Absent any objections here or rationale for keeping the long version I've redone my change shortening it. I don't claim this is ideal, but it was is clearly too long, and it needs to be no longer than one or two reasonably sized paragraphs.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 17:25, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

::: I've made the right-floated image [//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Mathematics/Intro/Image_Layout&diff=647628457&oldid=647627877 a bit smaller] now that the intro text is shorter. - dcljr (talk) 23:43, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Affinité (mathématiques) / Affinität (Mathematik)

Hello,

In French Wikipédia, there is Affinité (mathématiques) ; in German Wikipédia, there is Affinität (Mathematik). There is no item in American/british Wikipédia : perhaps should you create the item ?

Sincerely yours,

--Éric Messel (talk) 07:19, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

Should we deselect some articles?

I would have discussed this at Portal talk:Mathematics/Selected article archive or Portal talk:Mathematics/Selected picture, but I'd have to post here to point people to the discussion, anyway, so I'm just discussing it here... At Portal talk:Mathematics/Selected picture I have created a table with all of the "articles of the week" (a.k.a., "featured articles"), "selected articles", "pictures of the month" and "selected pictures" ever used on the Mathematics portal. (Note that we currently use the "selected article" and "selected picture" components; the others are now deprecated.) Scanning the table, one can see that both Selected article 7 and Selected picture 10 link to the Trigonometric function article and use the image Circle-trig6.svg; and both Selected article 34 and Selected picture 17 link to Knot theory but they use different images. Should we merge the text of one of each pair of these components into the other and remove the redundant component? (If so, I vote for keeping the selected pics and removing the selected articles — but I'm biased, since I've put a lot of work into the selected pics component). Opinions? - dcljr (talk) 21:32, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

= Should we deselect some articles? =

Interested parties, please see Portal talk:Mathematics#Should we deselect some articles? to discuss how we should deal with certain redundancies between the lists of selected articles and selected pictures. - dcljr (talk) 23:41, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

Compared to previously selected articles and images

Portal:Mathematics currently features a randomly selected article chosen from among 40 articles chosen in the past for display on the portal page. Before that, a manually updated "Article of the Week" feature was in use. The portal still (as I type this) contains a "Picture of the month" component, which falls back to a randomly selected past image when an image hasn't been chosen for the current month. I have started the switch to a random "Selected picture" component after a short discussion over a year ago at Portal talk:Mathematics#Selected picture.

Here's (the beginnings of) a table listing "all" of the articles and images featured (or set to be featured) on the portal via any of the above mechanisms. Still working on this... - dcljr (talk) 23:54, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

: Note: The Selected picture component went "live" {{diff|Portal:Mathematics|597896730|589141963|on 3 March 2014}}. - dcljr (talk) 21:20, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
