The Porto Alegre Metro (Portuguese: Metrô de Porto Alegre, commonly called Trem or Trensurb) is a transit system operated jointly by the federal government, the state government of Rio Grande do Sul and the city of Porto Alegre through the company Trensurb (Company of Urban Trains of Porto Alegre SA) in Brasil. It has 22 stations,{{cite web |url=http://www.trensurb.gov.br/paginas/paginas_detalhe.php?codigo_sitemap=36 |title=Todas as Estações |publisher=Empresa de Trens Urbanos de Porto Alegre S.A. |language=pt |trans-title=All Stations |access-date=2015-11-05}} totaling {{convert|43.8|km|mi|sp=us}} of route, and carries about 175,000 users a day.
History
Image:Trensurb_-_Estação_São_Leopoldo_-_01.jpg
Line 1 of the subway built in Porto Alegre was started in 1980, linking the center of Porto Alegre to cities to the north of the metropolitan area, as Canoas, Esteio, Sapucaia do Sul, São Leopoldo and Novo Hamburgo. The route was selected to relieve the heavy traffic of highway BR-116, the only option before the construction of this line, which already had serious problems with transit at the time.
The Line 1 was inaugurated on March 2, 1985 between the Central Public Market and Sapucaia do Sul, covering a route of {{convert|27|km|mi|1|sp=us}} and 15 stations.{{cite web |url=http://www.trensurb.gov.br/paginas/paginas_detalhe.php?codigo_sitemap=48 |title=História |publisher=Empresa de Trens Urbanos de Porto Alegre S.A. |language=pt |trans-title=History |access-date=2014-06-15}}
= Extensions =
In December 1997, the line was extended to Unisinos. A {{convert|3.8|km|mi|adj=on|sp=us}} extension to São Leopoldo-Museum was added in November 2000, after two months of trial service.
A further {{convert|9.3|km|mi|adj=on|sp=us}} extension to Novo Hamburgo opened in two phases: a {{convert|4.9|km|mi|adj=on|sp=us}}, two station stretch opened in July 2012, followed by the final {{convert|4.4|km|mi|adj=on|sp=us}}, three station stretch on December 21, 2013.{{cite web |url=http://www.trensurb.gov.br/paginas/paginas_noticias_detalhes.php?codigo_sitemap=3959 |title=Trensurb Estende Funcionamento Das Novas Estações |publisher=Empresa de Trens Urbanos de Porto Alegre S.A. |language=pt |trans-title=Trensurb Extends Operation With New Stations |date=December 20, 2013 |access-date=2014-06-15}}
