History
Potlatch 1 was released mid 2006 and was the default editor on the main OpenStreetMap site until it was replaced by Potlatch 2 in April 2011. The name Potlatch came from the name of newsletter of the Lettrist International art collective.
Tim Berners-Lee demonstrated editing OpenStreetMap using Potlatch during his TED The next web talk in 2009.{{Cite web|title=The next web|last=Berners-Lee|first=Tim|author-link=Tim Berners-Lee|url=https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_berners_lee_the_next_web|access-date=22 July 2024|website=www.ted.com|date=13 March 2009 |language=en}}
An alpha version of Potlatch 2, a complete reimplementation of the software, was published in summer 2010.{{Cite web |date=2010-11-29 |title=OpenStreetMap editor Potlatch 2 launched {{!}} OpenStreetMap Blog |url=https://blog.openstreetmap.org/2010/11/29/openstreetmap-editor-potlatch-2-launched/ |access-date=2024-08-20 |language=en-US}} In April 2011, Potlatch 2 was released for general use.{{Cite web |title=Golem.de: IT-News für Profis |url=https://www.golem.de/sonstiges/zustimmung/auswahl.html?from=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.golem.de%2F1104%2F82576.html |access-date=2024-08-20 |website=www.golem.de}}{{Cite web |last=HarryWood |date=2011-04-05 |title=Potlatch 2 is here {{!}} OpenStreetMap Blog |url=https://blog.openstreetmap.org/2011/04/05/potlatch-2-is-here/ |access-date=2024-08-20 |language=en-US}} After Microsoft had granted OpenStreetMap permission to use aerial imagery from their Bing Maps service for tracing, Potlatch 2 was extended to display these images in the background.
iD began as a reimplementation of Potlatch 2 architecture in JavaScript.{{cite web|title=It all starts with an editor|last=Fairhurst|first=Richard|url=http://www.systemed.net/blog/index.php?post=24|date=14 October 2012|access-date=2 November 2012|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121023145335/http://www.systemed.net/blog/index.php?post=24|archive-date=23 October 2012}}{{cite web|last=MacWright|first=Tom|title=iD Updates|url=http://mapbox.com/osmdev/2012/11/14/id-updates/|publisher=MapBox|access-date=20 November 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131212130255/https://www.mapbox.com/osmdev/2012/11/14/id-updates/|archive-date=12 December 2013|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|title=Neuer Editor für OpenStreetMap|trans-title=New editor for OpenStreetMap|last=Dubowy|first=Liane M.|url=https://www.heise.de/news/Neuer-Editor-fuer-OpenStreetMap-1798941.html|date=6 February 2013|access-date=22 July 2024|work=heise online|publisher=Heise Gruppe GmbH & Co.
