Background
Before they recorded Preacher's Kid, Semler made a documentary about the Christian music industry. In an interview with a recording executive, they asked about including Queer Christian artists, but they were told that the subject doesn't come up.{{cite web| url=https://www.huffpost.com/entry/semler-queer-christian-music-industry_n_60243370c5b61e9c458dffbc|title=This Queer Christian's Album Challenges The Contemporary Christian Music Industry |last=Kuruvilla |first=Carol| website=The Huffington Post |date=February 10, 2021|access-date=February 27, 2021}} In an interview with Michel Martin of NPR, they said that they chose to categorize the album as a Christian album because "I have a lived Christian experience. My faith is deeply important to me. And there's a pluralism of beliefs within Christianity, within that umbrella. And we know that to be true. But yet, within the genre of music, of Christian music, it's just so homogenous." {{cite web |url=https://www.whqr.org/post/musician-semler-talks-new-album-preachers-kid#stream/0 |title=Musician Semler Talks New Album 'Preacher's Kid' |author= |publisher= |date=March 6, 2021 |website=WHQR |access-date=March 12, 2021}}
Semler recorded the album using their laptop and a USB microphone.
