Production

The design was built by Precision Boat Works in Palmetto, Florida, United States, between 2001 and 2018, but it is now out of production.{{cite web|url = https://sailboatdata.com/builder/precision-boat-works|title = Precision Boat Works|access-date = 11 November 2021|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2021|archive-url= https://archive.today/20200913193940/https://sailboatdata.com/builder/precision-boat-works|archive-date= 13 September 2020|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= http://www.precisionboatworks.com/boats/p185/index.php|title= Precision 185|access-date= 11 November 2021|author= Precision Boat Works|work= precisionboatworks.com|year= 2021|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20211105143917/http://www.precisionboatworks.com/boats/p185/index.php|archive-date= 5 November 2021|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url = http://www.precisionboatworks.com/dealers/index.php|title = Precision Boats Information|accessdate = 11 November 2021|author= Precision Boat Works|work = precisionboatworks.com|year=2020|archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20200712233110/http://www.precisionboatworks.com/dealers/index.php|archivedate = 12 July 2020|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://www.tradeonlytoday.com/manufacturers/precision-boat-works-ceases-production|title= Precision Boat Works ceases production|access-date= 11 November 2021|work= Trade Only Today|date= 3 August 2018|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20180803202044/https://www.tradeonlytoday.com/manufacturers/precision-boat-works-ceases-production|archive-date= 3 August 2018|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://images.saymedia-content.com/.image/cs_srgb/MTU3NDcwMDQ1ODIyMjY0OTk4/precisionboatworks.pdf|title= Precision Boat Works Is Moving|access-date= 11 November 2021|author= Precision Boat Works|work= Press Release|date= 2 August 2018|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20211102233253/https://images.saymedia-content.com/.image/cs_srgb/MTU3NDcwMDQ1ODIyMjY0OTk4/precisionboatworks.pdf|archive-date= 2 November 2021|url-status= live}}

Design

The Precision 185 CB is a recreational sailboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a fractional sloop rig, a raked stem, an open plumb transom, a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a retractable centerboard. It displaces {{convert|590|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}}.

The boat has a draft of {{convert|4.83|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the centerboard extended and {{convert|6|in|cm|abbr=on}} with it retracted, allowing operation in shallow water, beaching or ground transportation on a trailer.

For sailing downwind the design may be equipped with a symmetrical spinnaker. Hiking straps are also optional.

Operational history

In a 2002 review Alan Andrews wrote, "the Precision 185 was voted Best Value for its combination of good sailing characteristics, substantial construction, and reasonable cost. First and foremost this boat performs well; yet it shouldn't intimidate even entry-level sailors."
