PressureNET was a crowd-sourced reporting network for barometric pressure data.
It worked by having many users install it on cell phones having air pressure sensors (barometers) and GPS sensors. Once the location was known from the GPS data, it was able to send messages back to the server with the air pressure for that location on Earth. With enough users running the application it was possible to create useful, global pressure data. It used open source software running on Android phones, to collect data from locations around the world. The data was available on a public website.{{cite web | url = http://www.technologyreview.com/news/510626/app-feeds-scientists-atmospheric-data-from-thousands-of-smartphones/ | title = App Feeds Scientists Atmospheric Data from Thousands of Smartphones | work = MIT Technology Review | date = 1 February 2013 | first = Nancy | last = Gohring | accessdate = 1 February 2013 | archive-date = 2 February 2013 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20130202025956/http://www.technologyreview.com/news/510626/app-feeds-scientists-atmospheric-data-from-thousands-of-smartphones/ | url-status = live }}{{cite news | last = Kar | first = Saroj | title = PressureNET: Android Open CrowdSourced Weather Network | url = http://siliconangle.com/blog/2012/12/03/pressurenet-android-open-crowdsourced-weather-network/ | newspaper = SiliconANGLE | date = 3 December 2012 | access-date = 21 January 2013 | archive-date = 26 April 2014 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140426201147/http://siliconangle.com/blog/2012/12/03/pressurenet-android-open-crowdsourced-weather-network/ | url-status = live }}{{cite news | last = Gohring | first = Nancy | title = Android app could help scientists predict the weather | url = https://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-01/08/android-weather-app | newspaper = Wired | date = 8 January 2013 | access-date = 21 January 2013 | archive-date = 13 April 2016 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20160413031109/http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-01/08/android-weather-app | url-status = live }}{{cite news | last = Beeler | first = Carolyn | title = Sandy silver lining: Storm helped app developers inch closer to 'nowcasting' weather | url = http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/local/item/49316 | newspaper = NewsWorks | date = 8 January 2013 | access-date = 21 January 2013 | archive-date = 21 January 2013 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20130121150925/http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/local/item/49316 | url-status = live }}{{cite news |title=Смартфоны помогут прогнозировать погоду |trans-title=Smartphones help predict the weather |url=http://hitech.vesti.ru/news/view/id/1092 |access-date=21 January 2013 |newspaper="Вести" интернет-газета" |date=17 January 2013 |archive-date=20 January 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130120203720/http://hitech.vesti.ru/news/view/id/1092 |url-status=live}}
