History

The Pride of Performance award, including civil decorations was established in 1957 under the Decorations Act, 1975, enacted or modified in 1975. The award seeks to recognize notable achievements which are determined by the Pakistan Warrant of Precedence of 1980.

The award which was possibly first awarded in 1958, can also be conferred posthumously under a constitutional amendment Article 259 of clause two.{{Cite web| url=https://www.punjabpolice.gov.pk/system/files/CivilAwards2020.pdf| title=Letter & Enclosure}}{{Cite web| url=http://www.finance.gov.pk/circulars/civil_award.pdf| title=Recommendations for civil awards}} It was delayed twice in the history of Pakistan. The fourth president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the first head of state who did not confer or announce the award, and later in 2018, due to disqualification of Nawaz Sharif, the award was subsequently delayed.

The Presidential Pride of Performance is usually awarded by the president once a year at the Pakistan resolution day, but announcements are made at independence day ceremony held on 14 August.{{cite web | last=Ahmed | first=Shakeel | title=No Pride of Performance awards this year | website=DAWN.COM | date=12 March 2018 | url=https://www.dawn.com/news/1394669 | access-date=17 April 2020}} The award recommendations are made by the country's administrative units or respective ministry to the state governments where officials forward it to the Cabinet Secretariat and then president or federal government for final approval.{{cite web | last=Correspondents | first=Our | title=President decorates 159 with civil awards - Pakistan | website=The News International | date=23 March 2015 | url=https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/30854-president-decorates-159-with-civil-awards | access-date=17 April 2020}}{{cite web | last=Ali | first=Sarwat | title=A tribute to tabla player Muhammed Ajmal Khan - Encore | website=thenews.com.pk | date=2 February 2020 | url=https://www.thenews.com.pk/tns/detail/606431-tribute-to-tabla | access-date=17 April 2020}}
