Former romance author Jean Harper (Janine Turner), who once enjoyed a successful career writing passionate love stories, now finds herself isolated and struggling with both writer's block and profound loneliness following a difficult period in her personal life. Desperate to reconnect with the world and perhaps find the kind of romance she once wrote about, Jean reluctantly decides to venture into the unfamiliar territory of online dating by creating a profile on a popular matchmaking website.

After sifting through various potential matches and enduring several disappointing initial conversations, Jean finally connects with a charming and articulate correspondent who seems to understand her artistic sensibilities and shares her love of literature. Their digital relationship blossoms over weeks of increasingly intimate email exchanges and late-night conversations, with her mysterious suitor demonstrating an uncanny ability to say exactly what she needs to hear. Despite her natural caution and the warnings of friends about the dangers of online relationships, Jean finds herself genuinely excited about the prospect of meeting someone who appears to truly understand her.

When her correspondent finally suggests they meet in person, Jean nervously agrees, carefully selecting the perfect outfit and rehearsing conversation topics as she drives to his upscale suburban home. However, her romantic anticipation quickly turns to horror when she arrives at the address to find the front door slightly ajar. Upon entering the house and calling out for her date, Jean makes a gruesome discovery—her would-be romantic partner lies dead in his living room, the victim of what appears to be a violent crime.

This shocking discovery immediately thrusts the unsuspecting Jean into the center of a complex criminal investigation. As police detectives arrive on the scene, she becomes both a key witness and a potential suspect, forced to explain her presence at the crime scene while dealing with her own trauma and growing paranoia. The investigation reveals disturbing details about her deceased correspondent's secret life, including connections to other women he had contacted through the dating site and a web of deception that extends far beyond what Jean had imagined.

As the case unfolds, Jean begins to question everything about her online relationship and whether she was specifically targeted by someone with sinister motives or simply became an unwitting pawn in a larger, more dangerous game. The deeper the police probe into the victim's background and digital footprint, the more Jean realizes that the world of online dating harbors dark secrets and that her search for love may have made her a target for something far more sinister than heartbreak.
