The Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers were first published by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in 1847.{{citation|title=Journals of the Century|first=Tony|last=Stankus|publisher=Psychology Press|year=2002|isbn=978-0-7890-1134-3|page=378|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=O-1qrN9FlYoC&pg=PA378}}. The Proceedings were published under this single title until 1963, when they began to be published in two parts.
