Progressive Republican Party (Venezuela)
The Progressive Republican Party (Partido Republicano Progresista, PRP) was a short-lived Communist party in Venezuela, established in March 1936. It was created by Miguel Acosta Saignes, Rodolfo Quintero, Carlos Irazábal, and Miguel Otero Silva, among others, as a way for communists to circumvent a constitutional prohibition on the formation of communist parties.{{cite web |last1=Quintero |first1=Inés |title=LA IZQUIERDA 50 AÑOS ATRAS |url=https://gumiteca.org/PDF/SIC1986484_170-171.pdf |website=gumiteca.org |access-date=14 June 2025 |language=es |trans-title=The Left 50 years ago}}{{cite journal |last1=Rodríguez Chacín |first1=Ramón |title=Partidos políticos en Venezuela en los siglos XIX y XX |journal=Universidad de La Habana |date=June 2015 |issue=279 |pages=93–108 |url=http://scielo.sld.cu/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0253-92762015000100007&lng=es&nrm=iso |access-date=14 June 2025 |trans-title=Political Parties in Venezuela in the 19th and 20th Centuries |issn=0253-9276}}
In 1937, the party joined forces with Organización Venezolana (ORVE), a political movement founded by Mariano Picón Salas and Rómulo Betancourt, to form the National Democratic Party (Partido Democrático Nacional, PDN). The aim was to gain influence ahead of the 1939 elections, but the PDN was banned by the end of that same year, and its leaders were forced into exile.
