Progressive Social Networks ({{langx|es|Redes Sociales Progresistas}}, RSP) was a Mexican center-left political party formed in 2020.
History
RSP was founded on January 19, 2019, as a civil association, by Juan Iván Peña Neder.{{Cite news |last=Aguirre |first=Alberto |date=October 20, 2019 |title=Los dueños de las Redes Sociales Progresistas |work=El Economista |url=https://www.eleconomista.com.mx/opinion/Los-duenos-de-las-Redes-Sociales-Progresistas-20191020-0052.html |access-date=February 7, 2021 |trans-title=The owners of Progressive Social Networks |archive-date=January 16, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210116142213/https://www.eleconomista.com.mx/opinion/Los-duenos-de-las-Redes-Sociales-Progresistas-20191020-0052.html |url-status=live }} Over the course of the year, it worked to obtain registration as a political party; by December 2019, they had signed up 262,000 party members and held assemblies in 20 of 32 states, which allowed them to meet the requirements set by the Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE).{{Cite news |last=Gil Olmos |first=José |date=December 28, 2019 |title=Con las Redes Sociales Progresistas, el gordillismo entra al quite en favor de la 4T |language=spanish |work=Proceso |url=https://www.proceso.com.mx/reportajes/2019/12/28/con-las-redes-sociales-progresistas-el-gordillismo-entra-al-quite-en-favor-de-la-4t-236433.html |access-date=February 7, 2021 |archive-date=February 13, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210213174435/https://www.proceso.com.mx/reportajes/2019/12/28/con-las-redes-sociales-progresistas-el-gordillismo-entra-al-quite-en-favor-de-la-4t-236433.html |url-status=live }}
However, a change in legal representative on October 9, 2019, less than a year after its foundation, portended a shift in the party's power base, after the executive committee replaced Peña Neder with José Fernando González Sánchez, son-in-law of powerful—but corrupt{{cite web|title=The 10 Most Corrupt Mexicans Of 2013|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/doliaestevez/2013/12/16/the-10-most-corrupt-mexicans-of-2013/#2715e4857a0b798dfe167a8c|magazine=Forbes|accessdate=January 16, 2016|archive-date=January 14, 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160114115957/http://www.forbes.com/sites/doliaestevez/2013/12/16/the-10-most-corrupt-mexicans-of-2013/#2715e4857a0b798dfe167a8c|url-status=live}}—teachers' union leader Elba Esther Gordillo.{{r|duenos}} González Sánchez and René Fujikawa, a former federal deputy for the defunct New Alliance Party that was also tied to Esther, had been present at RSP's first official act.{{Cite news |date=January 19, 2019 |title=Surge un nuevo partido político ligado a Elba Esther Gordillo y a ya saben quién |language=es-ES |work=Reporte Índigo |url=https://www.reporteindigo.com/reporte/surge-un-nuevo-partido-politico-ligado-a-elba-esther-gordillo-y-usan-imagen-de-amlo/ |access-date=February 7, 2021 |archive-date=October 20, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201020215850/https://www.reporteindigo.com/reporte/surge-un-nuevo-partido-politico-ligado-a-elba-esther-gordillo-y-usan-imagen-de-amlo/ |url-status=live }} That same week, the party moved its national headquarters. The shift, which briefly left two competing leadership teams claiming to run the party, threatened the party's ability to hold the remaining state assemblies necessary to obtain registration.{{Cite news |date=October 25, 2019 |title=Yerno de Elba Esther denuncia a fundador de Redes Sociales Progresistas; la pugna está que arde |language=es |work=Eme Equis |url=https://m-x.com.mx/secretos/yerno-de-elba-esther-denuncia-a-fundador-de-redes-sociales-progresistas-la-pugna-esta-que-arde |access-date=February 7, 2021}}
In February 2020, the party held a national assembly in Mexico City and announced that they had surpassed the INE registration requirements, with 445,000 party members and 23 state assemblies.{{Cite news |last=Arellano |first=Silvia |date=February 22, 2020 |title=Redes Sociales Progresistas celebra asamblea nacional |language=es-MX |work=Milenio |url=https://www.milenio.com/politica/redes-sociales-progresistas-celebra-asamblea-nacional |access-date=February 7, 2021 |archive-date=June 1, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210601193205/https://www.milenio.com/politica/redes-sociales-progresistas-celebra-asamblea-nacional |url-status=live }} However, on September 3, the INE voted 8–3 to deny registration to the aspiring party, due to its concerns over the extensive participation of leaders of the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE), the teachers' union that Esther had once headed, in its organization and allegations that the SNTE had provided gifts to assembly attendees. Party leader González Sánchez decried what he saw as last-minute changes in the INE's own requirements and imposing additional ones relating to finances;{{Cite news |last=López |first=Rafael |date=September 4, 2020 |title=INE niega registro a Redes Sociales Progresistas como partido |language=es-MX |work=Milenio |url=https://www.milenio.com/politica/ine-niega-registro-redes-sociales-progresistas-partido |access-date=February 7, 2021 |archive-date=April 5, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210405223701/https://www.milenio.com/politica/ine-niega-registro-redes-sociales-progresistas-partido |url-status=live }} he noted that political observers would find such an arrangement "unthinkable".{{Cite news |date=September 21, 2020 |title=Tribunal electoral resolverá impugnaciones de organizaciones |language=es |work=El Heraldo de México |url=https://heraldodemexico.com.mx/nacional/2020/9/21/tribunal-electoral-resolvera-impugnaciones-de-organizaciones-208586.html |access-date=February 7, 2021 |archive-date=January 16, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210116081501/https://heraldodemexico.com.mx/nacional/2020/9/21/tribunal-electoral-resolvera-impugnaciones-de-organizaciones-208586.html |url-status=live }} In January 2021, González Sánchez noted that Esther is not a member of RSP or any other political party.{{Cite news |date=January 25, 2021 |title=Por voto electrónico, Redes Sociales Progresistas elegirá a candidatos |language=es-MX |work=Milenio |url=https://www.milenio.com/politica/elecciones-2021/elba-esther-asesora-cercana-redes-sociales-progresistas |access-date=February 7, 2021 |archive-date=February 5, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210205002224/https://www.milenio.com/politica/elecciones-2021/elba-esther-asesora-cercana-redes-sociales-progresistas |url-status=live }}
On October 14, 2020, the Tribunal Electoral del Poder Judicial de la Federación (TEPJF) reversed the INE's decision and granted registration to RSP; the tribunal's judges stated in their decision that they were not able to prove the involvement of the SNTE itself in the party's organization.{{Cite news |date=October 14, 2020 |title=TEPJF otorga registro como partido político a Redes Sociales Progresistas, cercano a Elba Esther |language=es-ES |work=Reporte Índigo |url=https://www.reporteindigo.com/reporte/tepjf-otorga-registro-como-partido-politico-a-redes-sociales-progresistas/ |access-date=February 7, 2021 |archive-date=February 14, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210214062206/https://www.reporteindigo.com/reporte/tepjf-otorga-registro-como-partido-politico-a-redes-sociales-progresistas/ |url-status=live }}
To manage its internal primary elections, after receiving approval from the INE, RSP launched the app Mi apoyo RSP (My Support RSP), which allowed registered party members to vote in internal elections from their smartphones; voters were also able to cast ballots online and at voting machines.{{Cite news |last=Cortés |first=Juan Carlos |date=January 31, 2021 |title=Inicia Redes Sociales Progresistas proceso de elección interna en urnas electrónicas |language=es |work=El Universal |url=https://www.eluniversal.com.mx/nacion/inicia-redes-sociales-progresistas-proceso-de-eleccion-interna-en-urnas-electronicas |access-date=February 7, 2021 |archive-date=February 1, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210201055520/https://www.eluniversal.com.mx/nacion/inicia-redes-sociales-progresistas-proceso-de-eleccion-interna-en-urnas-electronicas |url-status=live }}
