Project 21180M is a series of icebreakers being built for the Russian Navy, developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau, intended as a cheaper alternative to the larger and more expensive Project 21180.{{Cite web|url=https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/3269247|title=Ледоколы дошли до "Алмаза"|date=13 April 2017|access-date=24 April 2024|language=ru|website=kommersant.ru}}
Development and construction
In the mid-2010s, the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation announced that a fleet of new auxiliary icebreakers would be built for the Russian Navy as part of the ongoing fleet renewal program to replace Soviet-era vessels.{{cite web|url=http://function.mil.ru/news_page/world/more.htm?id=11911651@egNews|title=Минобороны России закупит перспективные корабли и подводные лодки для Военно-Морского Флота|language=ru|publisher=Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation|date=25 March 2014|access-date=22 November 2020}} However, the initial plans for the construction of four {{convert|6000|t|LT|adj=on}} Project 21180 icebreakers was revised after the lead ship, Ilya Muromets, turned out to be too expensive. Consequently, Vympel Design Bureau developed a revised design, Project 21180M, with about two thirds of the displacement and more limited functionality compared to the bigger vessel.{{cite web|url=https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/3269247|title=Ледоколы дошли до "Алмаза"|language=ru|publisher=Kommersant|date=13 April 2017|access-date=22 November 2020}}{{cite web|url=https://tvzvezda.ru/news/forces/content/201504030941-40gq.htm|title=12 тысяч миль льда за 60 суток.
