Dumont, who reclassified certain species previously assigned to Dasyscyphus based on distinct morphological features. Species in this genus are characterized by small, cup-shaped apothecia, often with a hairy exterior. Recent studies have identified new species within this genus, such as Proliferodiscus ailaoensis, described in 2024 from Yunnan Province, China. This species exhibits yellow to creamy apothecia with bushy hairs and narrowly fusiform ascospores, highlighting the genus's morphological diversity.
