It was described by Emma Stanislavovna Karmovskaya in 2006.Karmovskaya, E. S., 2006 [ref. 29417] Promyllanter atlanticus (Anguilliformes, Congridae), a new species from the continental slope of southwestern Africa. Journal of Ichthyology v. 46 (no. 8): 566-569. It is a marine, deep water-dwelling eel which is known from the Republic of Congo, in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean (from which its species epithet is derived). It is known to dwell at a depth of {{convert|495|m|ft}}. Males can reach a maximum total length of {{convert|51.8|cm|in}}, while females can reach a maximum TL of {{convert|48.5|cm|in}}.
