Équateur is one of the 21 newest provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo created by the 2015 repartitioning. History

The province of Équateur created in 1917 was much larger than today. Over time it went through a number of border and name changes. Under Article 2 of the 2006 Constitution it was to assume its current boundaries,{{Cite web| title = Constitution de la République démocratique du Congo: Article 2 | publisher = Wikisource |url = http://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Constitution_de_la_R%C3%A9publique_d%C3%A9mocratique_du_Congo#Article_2 }} but administratively they were not finalized until 2015.

Administrative divisions
