Ptolemais (tribe)

Ptolemais ({{langx|grc|Πτολεμαΐς}}) was a tribe ({{transl|grc|phyle}}) added by the ancient Athenians to the previous list of 12 Athenian tribes. The date of the addition used to be subject of a scholarly discourse,{{sfn|Pritchett|1942|p=413}} but modern researchers{{sfn|Russo|2023|p=83}} agree with William Scott Ferguson who (in 1932) suggested that the event took place in 224–223 B.C..{{sfn|Pritchett|1942|p=413}} Ptolemy III was chosen as one of the Eponymous Heroes due to urgency of keeping friendship with Ptolemaic Egypt.{{sfn|Pritchett|1942|p=423}} The Monument of the Eponymous Heroes had one statue added, starting the so-called Period III.

While the Athenians added the new {{transl|grc|phyle}} to their list at the 7th place,{{sfn|Pritchett|1942|p=413|loc=Note 1}} modern researchers use the Roman numeral XIII to designate Ptolemais.

The 13 demes that formed Ptolemais were collected from all 12 old {{transl|grc|phylai}} ("rule-of-one"), with the 13th, Berenicidae, newly created{{sfn|Traill|1975|p=30}} and named after Berenice II, wife of Ptolemy III. There was a scientific discourse on the subject, with Pritchett (1942) arguing that the "Macedonian" tribes Antigonis and Demetrias were spared.{{sfn|Pritchett|1942|p=425}}
