On 16 September 2012, Debbie Schipp from The Daily Telegraph reported Southern Star producers John Edwards and Imogen Banks were planning a second series of Puberty Blues. Edwards stated "Yes, we are discussing it now. There's a strong chance, and Imogen and I have been in the plotting room and are well into development ourselves. So for those demanding more, we have high hopes we'll deliver." Edwards and Banks revealed the storyline would probably pick up from where series one ended or maybe a year later.{{cite news|url=http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/producer-plotting-return-of-puberty-blues-to-the-screen/story-e6frewyr-1226474882481|title=Producer plotting return of Puberty Blues to the screen|last=Schipp|first=Debbie|work=The Daily Telegraph|location=Sydney|access-date=20 September 2012|archive-date=15 October 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121015105416/http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/producer-plotting-return-of-puberty-blues-to-the-screen/story-e6frewyr-1226474882481|url-status=live}}

Promotion and reception
Network Ten released the first episode exclusively to Facebook users who liked the official Puberty Blues page prior to the premiere.{{cite web|url=http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2012/08/puberty-blues-premieres-on-facebook.html|title=Puberty Blues premieres on Facebook|last=Knox|first=David|publisher=TV Tonight|date=8 August 2012|access-date=3 September 2012|archive-date=28 July 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240728012113/https://tvtonight.com.au/2012/08/puberty-blues-premieres-on-facebook.html|url-status=live}} Graeme Blundell from The Australian praised the first episodes and stated "And, like the book, the series is racy, confronting, often quite brutal, heartbreaking and coruscatingly entertaining. It sparkles even as it disturbingly illuminates a culture of adolescence that seems not so much dated as distressingly contemporary."{{cite news|url=http://www.theaustralian.com.au/arts/review/puberty-blues-takes-us-back-to-the-70s/story-fn9n8gph-1226446162736|author=Graeme Blundell|title=Puberty Blues Takes Us Back to the 70s|newspaper=The Australian|publisher=News Limited|access-date=3 September 2012|archive-date=20 August 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120820010712/http://www.theaustralian.com.au/arts/review/puberty-blues-takes-us-back-to-the-70s/story-fn9n8gph-1226446162736|url-status=live}}
Craig Mathieson of The Sydney Morning Herald wrote "Puberty Blues is good. Really good. What's perhaps been most interesting about the series, set as it is about 35 years back, is just how dark it is. No, this is not Mad Men, far from it, but the folks behind Puberty Blues have cultivated a surprisingly opaque picture of late-1970s Australia."{{cite news|url=http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-guide/wednesday-september-26-20120919-2656s.html|title=Wednesday, September 26|last=Mathieson|first=Craig|date=20 September 2012|work=The Sydney Morning Herald|access-date=23 September 2012|archive-date=28 July 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240728012111/https://mb.moatads.com/n.js?e=35&ol=0&qn=%604%7BZEYwoqI%24%5BK%2BdLLU)%2CMm~tM!90vv9L%24%2FoDb%2Fz(lKm3GFlNUU%2Cu%5Bh_GcS%25%5BHvLU%5B4(K%2B%7BgeG(%24y_%2CapE%3FSF(f%25%3BS%243O3P(ry5*ZRocMp1tq%5BN%7Bq%60RP%3CG.ceFW%7CoG%22mxT%3Bwv%40V374BKm55%3D%261fp%5BoU5t(KU*%3Ce%24%26*xw%5EjreMe31k5X%5BG%5E%5B)%2C2iVSX%3C_Y%7B!7IQ3HbmUZzCFm%5Du!x2l.uBlTVU%2F.%3Dh%3FtDJq%409BG&tf=1_nMzjG---CSa7H-1SJH-bW7qhB-LRwqH-nMzjG-&vi=111111&rc=1%2C1%2C0%2C5%2C747835005%2C1%2C2%2C0%2Cprobably%2Cprobably&rb=1-uNhnW%2BgiY9XHOforE1rDGF5wJkZRZh497Q4ryFr4Ar8HTKbn%2BvSmix1wV0AK2nh7uzk%3D&rs=1-ltsW7OTurwpsfw%3D%3D&sc=1&os=1-yQ%3D%3D&qp=10000&is=BBBBB2BBEYBvGl2BBCBBtUTE1RmsqbKW8BsrBu0rCFE48CRBeeBS2hWTMBBQeQBBn2soYggyUig0CBlWZ0uBBCCCCCCOgRBBiOfnE6Bkg7OxCb8MxOtJYHCBdm5kBhBBC9Y8oBXckXBR76iUUsJBCBBBBBBBBBWBBBj3BBBZeGV2BBBCMciUBBBjgEBBBBBB94UMgTdJMtEcpMBBBQBBBniOccBBBBBB47kNwxBbBBBBBBBBBhcjG6BBJM2L4Bk8BwCBQmIoRBBCzBz1BBCTClBBrbGBC4ehueB57NG9aJeRzBqEKiuwBBBB&iv=8&qt=0&gz=0&hh=0&hn=0&tw=jMAJ3%2BXTVT&qc=10&qd=10&qf=1400&qe=783&qh=1400&qg=900&qm=0&qa=800&qb=600&qi=800&qj=600&to=000&vy=ot%24b%5Bh%40%22oDgO%3DLlE6%3AYnIBMwqCf%5D)4%5Dz%2C%5B%26u9L%2F%2F%24b4%5DIAIbzbld%7Dt00%7Ca_BB%3FVxyEO%22zf4%5D%24cr16Zh5YigBghs%7ClTr1W*d%5B4kf%2FLyUoRdByZ%3C99Ks(I%7DY(T0c%7BDQ3MY.NjDby7p%26C&qr=0&ql=%3B%5BpwxnRd%7Dt%3Aa%5DmJVOG)%2C~%405%2F%5BGI%3F6C(TgPB*e%5D1(rI%24(rj2Iy!pw%40aOS%3DyNX8Y%7BQgPB*e%5D1(rI%24(rj%5EB61%2F%3DSqcMr1%7B%2CJA%24Jz_%255tTL%3Fwbs_T%234%25%60X%3CA&qo=0&i=NINE_GAM_HEADER1&hp=1&wf=0&sgs=3&vb=0&kq=1&hq=0&hs=0&hu=0&hr=0&ht=1&dnt=0&bq=11&f=0&j=&t=1722129671226&de=442151305025&rx=111360129250&m=0&ar=9cc5b3e58a7-clean&iw=8bf0264&q=1&cb=0&cu=1722129671226&ll=2&lm=0&ln=0&em=0&en=0&d=undefined%3Aundefined%3Aundefined%3Aundefined&bo=undefined&bp=undefined&bd=undefined&zMoatGSR=1&ph=&pj=standard&zGSRC=1&gu=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.smh.com.au%2Fentertainment%2Ftv-and-radio%2Fwednesday-september-26-20120919-2656s.html&id=1&ii=4&zMoatOrigSlicer1=undefined&zMoatOrigSlicer2=undefined&gw=ninegamheader317783335130&fd=1&it=500&ti=0&ih=2&pe=1%3A1006%3A1006%3A0%3A1418&fs=208210&na=12068059&cs=0&callback=MoatDataJsonpRequest_89955244|url-status=live}} Mathieson's colleague, Melinda Houston, gave the series a mixed review, saying "That combination of anticipation and ennui is something this version of Puberty Blues has captured beautifully.
