The aerial photography technique Public Lab is best known for involves lifting cameras above an area using tethered helium-filled weather balloons.{{Cite web|url=http://www.theatlanticcities.com/technology/2013/05/diy-mapping-goes-mainstream/5446/|title=DIY Mapping Goes Mainstream|last=Badger|first=Emily|website=CityLab|access-date=2019-01-10}}

Open source environmental monitoring

Public Lab's community develops open source hardware, software, and other open methodologies to democratize environmental monitoring. Recognizing that cost, complexity, and lack of access can prevent communities from playing an active role in documenting environmental problems, the community publishes plans and guides for Do It Yourself monitoring projects that can be made at home.{{Cite journal|last1=Wylie|first1=Sara Ann|last2=Jalbert|first2=Kirk|last3=Dosemagen|first3=Shannon|last4=Ratto|first4=Matt|date=2014-03-01|title=Institutions for Civic Technoscience: How Critical Making is Transforming Environmental Research|journal=The Information Society|volume=30|issue=2|pages=116–126|doi=10.1080/01972243.2014.875783|s2cid=9259713|issn=0197-2243}}{{Cite journal|last=Gibney|first=Elizabeth|date=2016-03-10|title='Open-hardware' pioneers push for low-cost lab kit|journal=Nature News|volume=531|issue=7593|pages=147–148|doi=10.1038/531147a|pmid=26961632|bibcode=2016Natur.531..147G|doi-access=free}}{{Cite journal|last1=Niaros|first1=Vasilis|last2=Kostakis|first2=Vasilis|last3=Drechsler|first3=Wolfgang|date=November 2017|title=Making (in) the smart city: The emergence of makerspaces|journal=Telematics and Informatics|volume=34|issue=7|pages=1143–1152|doi=10.1016/j.tele.2017.05.004|s2cid=26770874 |issn=0736-5853}}
