The anniversary of the annexation of the Galapagos Islands and Charles Darwin's birthday are also celebrated on February 12 as Galapagos Day{{sfnp|Moore|2021|p=[https://books.google.com/books?id=rwsVEAAAQBAJ&pg=PA174 174]}} ({{lang|es|dia de la Provincia}} or {{lang|es|dia de la Provincia de Galápagos}}). This is sometimes described on the mainland as Amazon and Galapagos Day or Orient Day ({{lang|es|dia del Oriente}}), as the discovery of the headwaters of the Amazon River by Francisco de Orellana in 1542 is also recorded occurring on the same day.{{citation |contribution-url=https://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Amazon+%26+Galapagos+Day |contribution=Amazon & Galapagos Day |title=Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World Dictionary |edition=4th |date=2010 }}.
