PunBB (PunBulletinBoard) is a discussion forum software written in PHP, released under the GNU General Public License.
History
PunBB was founded by Rickard Andersson as a personal project to create an alternative discussion board.{{Cite web |title=PunBB |url=https://punbb.informer.com/about.php |access-date=2024-07-26 |website=punbb.informer.com}} In August 2003, version 1.0 was released under the GNU General Public License.{{Citation |title=punbb/punbb |date=2024-03-29 |url=https://github.com/punbb/punbb |access-date=2024-07-26 |publisher=PunBB}}
PunBB was originally known simply as Pun because "a pun is a play on words and that's basically what happens on a bulletin board".{{citation | url=http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16370 | title=Interview with Rickard Andersson | date=November 23, 2005 | work=The Admin Zone | url-status=dead | archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20060315015020/http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16370 | archivedate=March 15, 2006 }} The BB addition stands for the bulletin board. PunBB is available in many languages, including Spanish, Russian, Italian, and many other languages. Languages are created by contributors to the project, languages are not officially made by PunBB. However, they are supported.
In 2007 the project's code and rights were sold to Informer Technologies, Inc.{{Cite web |title=Project History |url=https://punbb.informer.com/wiki/project_history |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230203092543/https://punbb.informer.com/wiki/project_history |archive-date=2023-02-03 |access-date=2023-05-30 |website=punbb.informer.com}} The company did not institute any major changes at first other than removing the ability to donate money to the project. In April 2008, Rickard Andersson decided to leave the project for personal reasons.{{Cite web |url=http://rickardandersson.com/about |title=Rickard Andersson's official website |access-date=2011-09-27 |archive-date=2012-04-25 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120425134330/http://rickardandersson.com/about |url-status=dead }} As a result, some developers followed suit and initiated the development of their fork, known as FluxBB. A few days later the company moved the project from the punbb.org domain to its projects' umbrella domain at punbb.informer.com.
Several open-source and commercial project discussion boards use PunBB.{{Cite web |title=>Who uses punbb - PunBB Wiki |url=https://punbb.informer.com/wiki/who_uses_punbb |accessdate=Oct 24, 2022 |website=punbb.informer.com |archive-date=October 24, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221024074826/https://punbb.informer.com/wiki/who_uses_punbb |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |title=Loading... |url=http://forum.nevercorner.net/ |accessdate=Oct 24, 2022 |website=forum.nevercorner.net |archive-date=October 6, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221006081620/https://forum.nevercorner.net/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |title=Forex Forum |url=https://forexsb.com/forum/ |accessdate=Oct 24, 2022 |website=forexsb.com |archive-date=October 24, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221024074830/https://forexsb.com/forum/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |title=Musikcube |url=http://www.musikcube.com/punbb/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070118041335/http://www.musikcube.com/punbb/ |archive-date=2007-01-18 |access-date=2011-09-27}} Until September 2011, Facebook's Developers were using PunBB to power the Facebook Developer's Forum, where users participated in discussions and could submit bug reports.{{Cite web |url=http://forum.developers.facebook.net/ |title=Facebook Developers' Forum |access-date=2011-09-27 |archive-date=2011-09-27 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110927225012/http://forum.developers.facebook.net/ |url-status=live }}

FluxBB is a fork of PunBB created by its developers after Andersson left the project in April 2008. The developers felt that forking was necessary to maintain control over the development process without the influence of commercial interests.{{cite web |author=Connor |date=2008-05-09 |df=mdy |title=Development team announcement |website=FluxBB |accessdate=2019-11-30 |url=https://fluxbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=81 |archive-date=2020-11-09 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201109013957/https://fluxbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=81 |url-status=live }} As with PunBB, it was released under the GNU General Public License.{{Cite web |url=http://www.ohloh.net/projects/FluxBB/analyses/latest |title=Ohloh code analysis |access-date=2012-12-05 |archive-date=2008-09-24 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080924070429/http://www.ohloh.net/projects/FluxBB/analyses/latest |url-status=live }}{{Cite web|url=https://fluxbb.org/about/|title=Introducing FluxBB - FluxBB|website=fluxbb.org|accessdate=Oct 24, 2022|archive-date=March 31, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190331154304/https://fluxbb.org/about/|url-status=dead}} In July 2008, FluxBB was announced as a finalist in SourceForge.net's 2008 Community Choice Awards in the "Best New Project" category.{{Cite web|url=http://sourceforge.net/community/cca08-finalists|title=Sourceforge CCA 2008 finalists|website=sourceforge.net|accessdate=Oct 24, 2022|archive-date=August 28, 2008|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080828050825/http://sourceforge.net/community/cca08-finalists|url-status=dead}}{{cite news | url=http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P1-154027666.html | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141011152933/http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P1-154027666.html | url-status=dead | archive-date=October 11, 2014 | title=SourceForge.net Names Finalists for Community Choice Awards | work=Wireless News | date=July 7, 2008 | accessdate=November 26, 2012}}
Originally a continuation of PunBB's 1.3 branch, it was announced in January 2009 that the then-current 1.3 branch would be discontinued and that FluxBB 1.4 would revert to being based on the 1.2 codebase.{{cite web |author=Connor |date=2009-01-10 |df=mdy |title=The future of FluxBB |website=FluxBB |accessdate=2019-11-30 |url=https://fluxbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=2465 |archive-date=2010-04-21 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100421163844/http://fluxbb.org/forums/topic/2465/the-future-of-fluxbb/ |url-status=dead }} For FluxBB 1.4, several features were backported from 1.3, including UTF-8 support, a new default theme, and the ability to split and merge posts. The extension system, however, was not included.{{citation needed|date=December 2012}} FluxBB 1.5 was released in May 2012.{{cite web |url=https://fluxbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6328 |title=FluxBB 1.5.0 released |website=FluxBB |last1=Liedke |first1=Franz |date=2012-05-06 |df=mdy |accessdate=2019-11-30 |archive-date=2022-05-25 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220525074402/https://fluxbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6328 |url-status=live }}
In July 2012 it was announced that FluxBB 2.0, the next major version of the software, would be based on the Laravel web framework, with existing work ported to the new framework.{{cite web |title=A new future for FluxBB 2.0 |url=https://fluxbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6470 |website=FluxBB |last1=Liedke |first1=Franz |date=2012-07-07 |df=mdy |accessdate=2019-11-30 |archive-date=2016-09-14 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160914163501/http://fluxbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6470 |url-status=dead }}
