Background

Noeline Hofmann wrote "Purple Gas", taking inspiration from the "tax-dedicated fuel" for farmers in Alberta, her time working on a ranch in western Manitoba, and her own rural upbringing.{{cite web|url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-artist-zach-bryan-1.7070569|title=Alberta country artist travels to Oklahoma to sing for Zach Bryan|date=December 28, 2023|work=CBC News|access-date=February 17, 2025}} She posted a clip of the song on TikTok in late 2023, and the video caught the attention of Zach Bryan, who initially invited Hofmann to record a video of her performing the song for his series called "The Belting Bronco".{{cite web|url=https://countrytown.com/news/zach-bryan-duets-with-noeline-hofmann-on-her-song-purple-gas/lQcriYiLio0/10-06-24|title=Zach Bryan Duets With Noeline Hofmann On ‘Purple Gas’|date=June 10, 2024|work=Countrytown|first=Tione|last=Zylstra|access-date=February 17, 2025}} Afterwards, Bryan asked Hofmann to record a duet of the song with him. The song was later included on his album The Great American Bar Scene, marking the first time Bryan recorded another artist's song for one of his albums.{{cite web|url=https://www.stereogum.com/2266979/zach-bryan-purple-gas-feat-noeline-hofmann/music/|title=Zach Bryan & Noeline Hofmann – “Purple Gas”|work=Stereogum|date=June 7, 2024|first=Tom|last=Breihan|access-date=February 17, 2025}} Bryan compared Hofmann to Gillian Welch, calling her one of his favourite artists.{{cite web|url=https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/noeline-hofmann-zach-bryan-purple-gas-hot-100-first-timers-1235712795/|title=Hot 100 First-Timers: Noeline Hofmann Earns Chart Debut With Zach Bryan Duet ‘Purple Gas’|first=Xander|last=Zellner|date=June 18, 2024|work=Billboard|access-date=February 17, 2025}}
