A qāriʾ ({{langx|ar|قَارِئ|lit=reader}}, plural {{lang|ar|قُرَّاء}} qurrāʾ or {{lang|ar|قَرَأَة}} qaraʾa; feminine form: qāriʾa {{langx|ar|قَارِئَة}}) is a person who recites the Quran with the proper rules of recitation (tajwid).{{cite book|last=Leaman|first=Oliver|title=The Qur'an : an encyclopedia|year=2008|publisher=Routledge|isbn=978-0-415-32639-1|url-access=registration|url=https://archive.org/details/quranencyclopedi2006unse}}
Although it is encouraged, a qāriʾ does not necessarily have to memorize the Quran, just to recite it according to the rules of tajwid with melodious sound.
