QF-EHEA

{{Short description|Frameworks describing higher education qualification}}

Qualifications Frameworks in the European Higher Education Area (QF-EHEA) are frameworks describing the higher education qualifications of countries participating in the Bologna Process. National Qualifications Frameworks (NQFs) provide a mapping between higher education qualifications and an overarching framework, allowing the cross-comparison of qualifications from different countries.{{cite web|url=http://www.ehea.info/article-details.aspx?ArticleId=65|title=Qualifications Frameworks in the EHEA|publisher=EHEA|access-date=29 May 2016}}

The overarching framework was adopted in May 2005 at a meeting of education ministers of the 48 participating countries. It consists of three cycles, approximately equivalent to bachelor's, master's and research doctorates (PhD-equivalent) degrees in the Anglophone world (note that US first professional degrees such as MD and JD are not PhD-equivalent, even though they are titled "doctorates"). A "short cycle" is also recognised within the first cycle, equivalent to British foundation degrees (US associate degrees).{{cite web|url=http://ec.europa.eu/education/ects/users-guide/programme-context_en.htm|title=ECTS Users' Guide|publisher=European Commission|access-date=29 May 2016}}{{cite web|url=http://www.ehea.info/Upload/document/ministerial_declarations/EHEAParis2018_Communique_AppendixIII_952778.pdf|title=Overarching framework of qualifications of the EHEA|publisher=EHEA}}{{cite web|url=http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ous/international/usnei/us/edlite-structure-us.html|title=Structure of U.S. Education|publisher=US Department of Education|access-date=29 May 2016}}{{cite web|url=https://www.britishcouncil.org/education/ihe/what-we-do/bologna-process-and-european-higher-education-area|title=European Higher Education Area and Bologna Process|publisher=British Council|access-date=29 May 2016}}

QF-EHEA in the United Kingdom

The NQFs linked to the QF-EHEA are the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Framework for Qualifications of Higher Education Institutions in Scotland (FQHEIS). The FQHEIS was certified as being aligned with the QF-EHEA in 2006 and the FHEQ in 2008.{{cite web|title=The Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-Awarding Bodies|date=November 2014|url=http://www.qaa.ac.uk/en/Publications/Documents/qualifications-frameworks.pdf|access-date=2016-05-29|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305083730/http://www.qaa.ac.uk/en/Publications/Documents/qualifications-frameworks.pdf|archive-date=2016-03-05|url-status=dead}}
