Overview
During the Iranian Revolution, the mosque was a site of revolutionary gatherings.{{cite book |last1=Ghamari-Tabrizi |first1=Behrooz |title=Foucault in Iran: Islamic Revolution after the Enlightenment |date=8 August 2016 |publisher=University of Minnesota Press |isbn=978-1-4529-5056-3 |language=en |page= }} The mosque was closed by the Shah in 1975 because of Mohammad Mofatteh's political teachings; however was reopened in 1978.{{cite web |url=https://www.masjed.ir/fa/article/2971/Role-of-the-mosques-of-Tehran-in-victory-of-the-Islamic-Revolution-of-Iran |title=Role of the mosques of Tehran in victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran |work=masjed.ir |lang=en |date=n.d. |access-date=26 April 2025 }}
Following clashes after the 2009 Iranian presidential election, the Iranian government approved a peaceful prayer gathering centered on the mosque, in response to an appeal by Mir Hossein Mousavi to allow for the community to mourn Neda Agha-Soltan and Sohrab Aarabi, both killed in the earlier protests. On June 28, 2009, between 2,000 and 5,000 mourners assembled in the streets surrounding the mosque and yelled "Salam bar Beheshti, Dorood bar Mousavi." Whilst police authorities stood by, there was no significant escalation of violence surrounding the mosque.{{cite web |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgUvDmcwmWU |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211220/rgUvDmcwmWU |archive-date=2021-12-20 |url-status=live |script-title=fa:حضور کروبی در اعتراضات مردمی روبه روی مسجد قبا |publisher=YouTube |date=2009-06-26 |access-date=2010-03-30 |lang=fa }}{{cbignore}}{{cite web |url=http://parsine.com/pages/?cid=8684 |access-date=June 28, 2009 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090719003416/http://parsine.com/pages/?cid=8684 |archive-date=July 19, 2009 |script-title=fa:عکس: حضور مصطفی ملکیان در تجمع حامیان میرحسین در مسجد قبا |lang=fa }}{{cite web |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNvUGCIRZ_4 |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211220/rNvUGCIRZ_4 |archive-date=2021-12-20 |url-status=live |trans-title=Reza Attaran Popular TV & Cinema Actor & Director in ghoba |script-title=fa:رضا عطاران مسجد قبا |date=28 June 2009 |publisher=YouTube |lang=fa |access-date=2010-03-30}}{{cbignore}}
